The majority of them have gigs every now and then. But yea, worrying about an unreliable piece of software can't very pleasant when playing..

- light skipping and hiccups, particularly noticable when playing intricate/detailed music such as ambient and IDM, but not so much with most EDM
- a bit more of a delay than with Serato when I used it

Torq is still a cheap alternative and for the most part a similar solution to Serato but I can't stand poor sound quality, that is #1 in my book.

While I have no answer for the first problem, for the other two, make sure, if you're on XP, that it's tweaked for audio. It is night and day a far as Torq's performance goes. Out of the box on my XP laptop, it was skipping around a lot and I had to set the latency very high. As soon as I did the "nemonic" XP tweaks, I had no more problems there. Make sure your latency on the Connectiv is as low as it will go. Also, make sure you pre-analyze your tracks before you play them for the first time. Playing a track as its being analyzed for the first time is asking for trouble.

Point of all this is, there are a few basically one-time edits/tweaks you have to make to your system, and most of the problems people are bringing up will go away. Remember, this is v 1.05 only and it's only been out for about a year. The next few updates, I believe, are going to address the majority of the remaining issues that people have with the software. The only way the software will improve is if people support it. I'd hate for people to read this thread with the ignorant comments that some people have made and decide not to buy it. As it is, it's more than capable as a DVS alone, with added features no less, for use at home OR IN THE CLUB! The "it's not the club standard" argument doesn't hold water with me because Torq is so new to the market.

+1 on the tweaks.. just got torq and after tweakin the settings a bit it worked even better than it did in the first place.. and also, xp is a piece of shit lol i wish i had a mac

i think it can handle its own clubs, if you look in the torq-dj forusm there are people who hold residencies with it.. i only got it less than a week ago so i'm not ready to make a definitive review as i havent tried it on my buddies pa yet but so far im hpapy with it and i cant wait till the 1.5 update which should "fix" alot of things for the connectiv users such as a proper key lock and more precise external control algorithms and the ability to hide internal mixer and many more

Yeah, I've since bought a new MacBook Pro and it runs great without any tweaking right out of the box. As much of a pain XP is, I've heard Vista is 10x worse.

Thanks for the reply. If you wouldn't mind elaborating on and specifying each of the tweaks you made, I'd have a much better idea of what you're talking about. At this point, all I understand is that you fucked with the latency in Torq, first setting it high and then setting it as low as it could go. Aside from messing with the latency, which everyone seems to know must be done, I dunno what other tweaks you're on about.

Cheers.

As far as Rememberance's experience with "degrade in sound quality" I'm curious as to weather he pre-adjusts the channel levels or not before mixing. the Torq software must nearly always be adjusted down -7 or -8 decibels before mixing on an external device because the signal will naturally clip. Most likely it is his negligence of the inherent clipping if you just leave your levels the way they are. I have done some pretty extensive testing of the audio quality including using coax SPDIF connections and RCA's and notice no degrading in quality WHATSOEVER however there is a slight colouration (only natural for software...even ableton).

Also, do a search for the pitch smoothing tweak. If you don't like how Torq, by default, updates it's pitch reading so slowly onscreen, there's a simple solution to make it show instant movement of the pitch slider.

Very, very true. That is one thing that helped me quite a bit; I always adjusted to -6.0db and there was a noticeable difference. Still not as good as Serato's quality, though.
