Indeed, if time isn't linear, then asking what created the universe becomes a meaningless question, because creation implies linear time.

Anyway, this is the kind of stuff I try not to bother with. Not because it isn't interesting, quite on the contrary, but I just can't grasp physical existence at all.

Edit: What's up with those names? "VY Canis Majoris"? Couldn't they have chosen something like "Gigantic Hotness in Canis Majoris" or "Billy Canis Majoris"?

In essence yes. It is said that the universe came into existence out of nothing (singularity) and will go back into nothingness. Such cycles will repeat endlessly. Pretty much sounds like the big bang at the beginning of time. Dunno how the physical predictions match up with the way the end of this cycle is predicted in the philosophy.

According to all the evidence we have right now, the universe's rate of expansion is increasing. This means that the "Big Crunch" theory has no support. A Big Freeze or Big Rip scenario looks more likely, given our current knowledge. Also see heat death of the universe.

For science that is so broad in concept (as big as possible!), it makes me wonder if there's much factual information to back it up

Honestly, the first question to be answered is "what is something?" String theory looks promising, but it isn't called string THEORY for nothing. One of my old physics professors was credited in the NOVA special on string theory, and he promised a good detailed explanation for me when I get back to Seattle.

Have I pondered about it all? Yes, but It'll most likely just start a flame-fest due to my religious view. (which, i will add, is largely a result of my 'pondering about it all') LiquidNitrogen, PM me if you want to discuss it.

The debate of the 'fine tuning argument' vs. 'single' and 'many universe arguments' will probably continue past our times (I bring them up since they seem to be the most prevalent).

I'll relate eROs.au's comment of scale and make the point that it gets increasingly difficult to measure the smaller things get as well as the bigger they get. That's a hurdle in itself. A nobel prize was awarded (withing the last couple years if I remember correctly) for a group that added a zero to the end of a measurement (what they measured, I can't remember, but it was small) effectively adding one extra significant digit to the right of the decimal.

The pictures posted in the first post don't amaze me as much as this one: http://regmedia.co.uk/2006/09/25/lots_of_galaxies.jpg I believe it was Rychard Bowens who did this. Basically, users of the hubble telescope had small windows of time to use it in, and the list would cycle through. Bowens, if that's who it was, passed his windows of time on for quite a while, basically stockpiling a good amount of usage time. When he felt he had enough he used it all at once, effectively taking a 'long exposure' of a VERY small spread. The result is the link above.

First, who ever said that "nothing" is anything more than a human made process? Who said the universe abides by logic, structure, and repetition?

Why do we assume that something can't just appear from nothing for any number of reasons, IF that is even what happens at all? What's a beginning and an end actually?
