Oh, also a woman with a newborn or child who is unable to walk. I'm not sure it's really about laziness though. I think the mentality is "Why should I have to expend extra energy in order for YOU to preserve yours?" "Why should YOU have to expend extra energy on account of me conserving mine?? What makes me so special that you should go the extra mile??" I really hate how this all sounds, just to let you know. I do recognize that it's a bit harsh, but I think high density populations, where people HAVE to look out for themselves because no one else will, are what produce the kind of behaviors you've been observing. Standing up on a crowded train is probably one more stressful thing that people want to cross off their list of stressful things that they have to deal with on a typical NYC day. It's a lot easier to be polite when the population is only 100 or 200,000. lol... I've been here too long.

Blake that has nothing to do with being a non-native new yorker. That post just made me lose a little respect for you.

I can't wait until your 80 and need a seat and I'll have my kids look at you and be like, fuck him let the old man stand there, maybe if we are lucky someone will push him down.

No matter how long I have lived in NY, when I ride the trains if there is someone who is more need of a seat then I am I am going to give it up, Guess my momma raised me right.

But this thread has more to do with being lazy then the NYC subway system.....cause we could go on and on and on about that

if we want to continue the laziness theme I've got more...explain to me why when I was an intern people in my office would run me around like I was their slave. One person would walk all the way down to my cube and give me something to give someone else who was literally steps away from me . Or even better when I go to the mailroom people are surprised that I'm willing to stick the FedEx stickers on my packages...

Sorry but just being old isn't enough to qualify a person for any kind of special treatment. There are plenty of old people who are perfectly healthy and physically capable. I see them every day preform the amazing feat of standing up while riding the train. My guess is that at least 10 million people pass through the city via public transportation every day, so riding the train for 15+ years it's likely that I've encountered many MANY old folks on the train so, to give up a seat for every last one I see... heh. Sorry but no. I usually just judge based on how each person looks. A perfectly healthy looking 62 year old still has a good few years left before I jump up out of my seat.

That is so true. The nice guys always end up bitter at some point. I used to be one of those; gave up my seat, opened doors, gave change to hoboes... Then slowly I realised how pointless it is in a competitive world where it's every man for himself. People will just abuse of you and be ungreatful. Besides - what have any of those people done for you?

One time I was going home late from work (4am or so) and I pass by some dirty looking hobo who asks me for change. I tell him I don't have any, but I was going to buy some stuff at a corner store and I'd give him some on my way back. I come back not 2 minutes later and he was gone. From that point I never gave change to anyone again.

So the moral of the story is; fuck other people. If I see a tired shaking old man with blisters on his feet, the fact that he's not me is reason enough not to give up my seat. Every man for himself. Now that I've grown accustomed to this line of thinking, I like it much better.

Isn't there a belief in Karma? Maybe that person wont do something for you but at some point in time someone will.

true meredith...I'm a firm believer in what goes around comes around. I try to treat people the way I would like to be treated...when I broke my right arm other people zipped up my coat, tied my shoes and took notes for me in school. There will be a time when everyone needs some type of help and the energy you exert to help them is less than the energy it takes for them to do something so why not do it?

And that's the difference between you and me. Like I said, I used to be all fluffy and generous like that. I wasn't raised bitter, life made me bitter, and I think that's the case with alot of people who used to be "nice guys" and aren't anymore. You're very fortunate to have friends who look out for you like that - but had you lived your whole life having to fight and fend for yourself, can you honestly say you'd have the same attitude as you do now? And can you blame me for mine?
