grunting is, IMHO, rather unnecessary...it's breathing that really matters. Some people can more quietly inhale/exhale, some people grunt.

One guy in my gym grunts in a such a way that it seriously sounds like he's getting f***ed in the ass with every rep, LOL. I wonder if he realizes how funny it sounds.

It's like how martial arts yell when doing certain attacks and stuff. They feel that it focuses them better.

Of course, that may be the reason why traditional martial artists get their ass kicked by MMA fighters
