If you have enough money to buy equipment to play in your bedroom, you have enough money to pay for music.

You're kidding, right? I mean I tend to agree with you on most things, but seriously, not everybody is able to afford stuff all of the time.

I hate to use a Mr. Mystery argument, but it just depends on how much importance you place on it. And is the alternative just downloading it free? Yeah you and I might not always have enough cash to buy whats in our cart, but we still buy music. I'm saying if you're capable of saving/spending the hundreds and even thousands of dollars needed to buy decks, you should be able to figure out some way to pay for your music...

To me it's just a question of caring. I care to support the people who made the tracks I play. I don't take it for granted...

I guess we just see it differently.

Except in a lot of cases one wouldn't be paying the artist, but rather some schmuck on Gemm or Discogs selling it for ten times its original value. And we're talking about records that are only a couple of years old here.

you gotta buy your shit. i'm a bedroom dj who once in a while will get a little club or party gig and i get most of my tracks from beatport

that being said, i have found some gems floating around the world of piracy, and if they're 320k and don't have any problems then I wouldn't mind playing it out. plus what about like bootlegs and tracks that aren't out yet?

That's part of being a DJ, diggin for new music any way you can. Just don't be a total leecher and not pay for anything, that's not cool.

And you have to wonder how good a DJ is if he's just playing tunes taken from piracy. It's my experience that you will be able to find well charted songs and tunes by popular producers via illegal downloading, but if you're ONLY playing tunes like that, you're not a very good dj anyways.

What about tunes that have never been made available as legal download and you don't have turntables? For example as far as I know Tiesto's mix of Southern Sun is vinyl only...

I think you can find many particular cases where you could justify downloading a "pirate" version, lot of people there have already aknowledged that, but as a general rule of thumb DJ should pay for their music.

And well... I know digital music is the revolution and such, but i think most "real" (pro, semi-pro, wanting to be a pro) DJs would have turntables? Otherwise Vinyl would not have been the standard until very recently.

i guess im trying to say, it's hard to understand how fun they are just by listening to their sets off the internet. they are actually really good djs in the sense of getting the crowd pumped, doing live mashups of tracks, having great energy, etc. maybe not the best technically- or even track selection-wise, but they do put on an amazing party when they're behind the decks. and that to me can make VERY good djs

I've never heard any Melbourne DJ's sets in my life. We're talking about DJ's playing music in clubs, that they didn't pay for...and that is why they aren't real DJs imo...
