yes, may 2008, and yes, been delayed many many times.

my question is:
is it possible that the equipment+particles are traveling so fast that they gain enough mass (as an object's speed nears the speed of light, it gains tremendous mass) to fall into the earth? I've read this scenario elsewhere, but I don't remember if it was an expert's quotation or just a random person pondering.
They said it could fall directly through the earth and shoot out the other side, or
1/fall through the earth into the core
2/fall into the earth and oscillate around the core's gravity until poof

Nah...You are right though...the mass does increase tremendously as objects near the speed of light. But remember what we are talking about here...tiny things the size of atoms. Even if an atom increased in mass by a factor of one billion, it would still weigh less than a ping pong ball.

first up, just curious, is this classified as chemistry talk of physics? id say physics but thats cause i did this sorta stuff in phys at school an not in chem.

That may be true, but in physics according to the thought experiment Schr�dinger's cat it can be.
Or at least thats my understanding of it.

And last time i checked there was no counter-proof to his hypothesis.

Does a particle (or body for that matter) at light speed have infinite mass, or just very big?

Back to the original experiment. I wonder what kind of safety measures they have taken for this, from what i know couldnt it 'stabilize' and cause SERIOUS issues? I mean do they have any idea how to stop a black hole?

As to whether this is chemistry or physics it is both. The main difference between chemistry and physics is scale. Physics is more interested in the elementary particles where chemistry is more interested in larger systems like molecules. Both however are subject to quantum mechanics, and there is a significant overlap. Especially if you are like me and you concentrate on physical/quantum chemistry instead of organic/biochem.


Not really sure but Schrodinger's equations are used to mathematically describe particles as a wave function. Any wave passing through a set of slits or a diffraction grating will be subject to interference.

The thought experiment says that when you go to measure the quantum system you collapse its wavefunction. Before you went to measure the system it was a superposition of different states. Superposition occurs when something "possesses" more than one value for a quantity (momentum, energy, position, etc...) I think this is where people get the idea something can be in two places at once.

Not too sure about the infinite mass, but I do know that in nuclear reactors electrons can travel faster than the speed of light causing Cerenkov radiation. And they do have mass albeit very small mass, so I'm assuming particles of very small mass can move at the speed of light without their mass becoming infinite.

Galactic black holes are caused by stars at least 5 times greater than our own. We're not collapsing stars man...

THese would be infintesimally small black holes, UNLIKE the ones created by supermassive stars and super novas. Stephen Hawking kind of proved black holes eventually evaporate into nothing. So these very very very small black holes would essentially evaporate in a split second, just barely detectable by our instruments.

Black holes are not eternal. They dissipate through Hawking radiation. The smaller the black hole, the quicker they radiate.
