Or, like Children Of The Corn, 7 full length movies. What the fuck?

off to see this now. will review when i get back.

Posted by denys envy on Nov-26-2007 02:30:

a few things really:

1. you paint that religious bitch green and she'll look like the Grinch

2. Thomas Jane is an undervalued actor. Damn good and I'd like to see him in more movies. I bet he regrets 'The Punisher'.

3. If that little kid starts crying I swear to god I'll... ohh.

4. Ha ha ha bitch got a can of peas to the head.

5. The whole tentacle melting thing was really unnecessary - made it a bit stupid like the wicked witch of the west.

6. Good ass movie - a bit of a musing on society during conflict in general. How the weak become the sheep - and the strong can't do anything about it because there are usually so few of them. Reminds me of 'The Life Of Brian' how some worship the gourd and others the sandal and so on. Also pertains to current events - how some out there are prosecuting our troops and blaming the war on them. GO SEE THIS!

Interesting observation.

I don't disagree with it, but I just find it interesting how, in the movie, it was the fanatical religious so eager to defame the military, yet in reality, it seems the fanatical religious so eager to support it. This is an odd dynamic in itself, I suppose - sort of how you (or I do anyways :P) would so readily curse the presence of police on the streets as they interfere with your doings, yet wish there was a cop around every time you see somebody else do something shitty. It's just the way people tend to use their constructions - tools, guns, government, religion, God, etc... Everything is so wonderful when it fits that frame of 'order', but once things no longer live up to how we think they should, once something goes 'wrong', we can just as easily turn on them. It seems one of those uncontrollable primitive inclinations and really should make people question just where their loyalties as 'citizens' lie.

//holy fucking tangent.

I'd go see that.

When did post-consumerism start

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Nov-26-2007 19:04:

When we started bitching about it, yet still participate in its course.

That catalyst was when you met that black guy in Iowa this weekend.

Man this movie was amazing imo. One of the better horror movies I have seen in quite awhile. It really isnt a monster film so much as how people tend to react in general during a crisis and how man returns to primal instincts when their lives are in danger. This movie def deals with the darker side of man. Especially when hope starts dimming the process of their psychological breakdown and their ultimate turn on each other in desperate attempts to appease the creatures. Ending was point on too. If the movie ended any differently I probably would of been disappointed. Just a great movie leaving the viewer with a ton of emotions. Only critique was that the effects of some of the monsters at point were on the raw and unrealistic side, almost looking cheesy in the sense. best example, scene with tentacles and norm. If you like horror movies then def see this movie.

couldn't have said it better. the ending definitely moved me, the loss of hope is traumatic in itself; the realization that there was hope after all is even more so.

Man, first time the tentacle ripped some pieces out of Norm, I was like I honestly thought the movie was PG-13 when I went in to see it. I was really quite wrong.

Spot-on with every observation. I was able to look past the effects - I didn't think they were really too bad at all. Especially considering the true monsters of the movie were the people, not the extra-dimensional critters.

I had no fucking clue where the ending was going. I was expecting him to wake up in bed screaming, the whole movie having been one, big nightmare. It was truly fucking tragic and I'm not sure I agree that there was indeed 'hope after all'. Perhaps the shining light of order and a return to 'normalcy' comes through, but really, what faith and hope could you ever cling onto in life after having gone through all of that?

Posted by denys envy on Nov-26-2007 20:07:

BUT the severed tentacle melting was pointless. what would've been wrong with just leaving it there or eliminating it in other ways - ex. it starts crawling towards them and they set it on fire.

Yeah, that was sort of loose end (pun intended???).

Like, there really wasn't a reason for it to melt, was there? I don't remember - did they shine the light on it and it melted or what? Kind of strange. I should probably read the story...

MMAAAAAAAAAAJJJJJOOORRR SPOILER ALERT>

Maybe I was a little unclear. The peeps in the car lost all hope and so took the next "logical" step. But at the end there was hope after all if they just hung on - but they had no faith in whatever (humanity, their future, i dunno), and the ending didn't have to go down like it did. that's what makes it so tragic. the fact that none of it had to happen if only they hung on for a bit longer.

the irony is that at the end they accepted their "fate" as predicted by the religious bitch, no? she prophesized their ultimate doom and it's almost like they believed her. in the end the religious bitch still won because she infiltrated their mind and undermined their hope, in turn causing the final scene to transpire.
had they not encountered her would they continue to survive? i mean what would be so wrong with living in the car for as long as you can hold out?

Ooh, good point. I didn't think about how they sort of did exactly as she said they would. But I think that's because of what I said earlier - most of the major themes int he film are left quite ambiguous. In that respect, I didn't view her preachings as actually some sort of prophecy - I just am not the type of person to have faith in her like that, I suppose. I mean, she 'foretold' that more people would die that one night, but really, does it take the channeling of God's eternal wisdom to predict something like that? Maybe that's just how I view religion - as one, big series of coincidences stemming from conveniently self-fulfilling prophecies; it's just really basic psychology, it seems - but people fall for it. But I fucking love that one can take different, valid views of the film. Truly awesome.
