still disappointing, however.

i remember watching a thing on 20/20 a few years ago about trying to get more healthier foods into the school systems. turns out Coke and Pizza Hut have a pretty good stronghold on the lunch-box system.

are fat people useful?

John Candy, Gabe Newell, Povarotti, Suge Knight.....

it goes into a lot of that too. that article was VERY informative for someone who doesnt know anything about the state of the food system.

Thats good its like that by you, cause by me it wasnt. My first job was at a grocery store. Now it was many years ago but we even used to joke in disgust while a good portion of the people on some sort of gov. help were buying crap for themselves & fat kids.

well i am a product of a former welfare family. i am pretty thin but most of my family is fat. they havent been on welfare for about 10 years now (i think its been longer) but they are poor. i can attest to the fact that its MUCH cheaper to buy shit food than good food. especially when theres 7 kids. its just expensive as hell to eat properly.

i actually posted a thread on this around the same time this article was written.

Yeah, I will agree with that. I still maintain that someone could eat relatively healthy on a modest budget though. It comes down portioning, being crafty, and eating the basics.

i wrote a paper about this last year.. pretty much what everyone else has said. eating healthy is not only a trend here in the united states, but an expensive habit as well. eating fast food here in the united states will cost you less than buying friuts and veggies in the grocery store.. and vice versa.

no, you can eat 1 pound of chken and salad and it wont get you as fat as if you eat one pound of double cheese burger and fries. think about it..

how long has it been since you priced shitty food? i used to eat horribly and get shitty food. ive changed my diet since then and i try to eat decently. relative to how much i require just for daily consumption it would cost me $20-25/day to eat healthy. if i eat totally shitty i can eat for $8/day. if i eat decently i spend about $12/day. this is based on 2 meals per day. thats a HUGE difference.

gehzumteufel is right on the money (no pun intended).

shit food is cheaper. why? because processed junk doesnt cost as much to produce, nor expire as quickly. its far cheaper to buy 1Kg of frozen nuggets than to get a 1Kg fresh steak. canned vegetables are also cheaper than fresh ones.

The bottom line is physics, conservation of energy: you can't store any calories if your body uses up more energy than it takes in through food.

Some food will be worse for your health in other ways (e.g. lots of simple sugar will tend to raise insulin levels and raise risk of diabetes), but weight itself is a function of calories burned vs. calories ingested. The only exception to this is edema, where your body is storing a ton of water in addition to fat (as has happened with some enormously obese people); but that isn't a factor for most people.

But exercise is so hard.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Nov-26-2007 03:57:

The "crappy food is cheap" argument doesn't make any sense. If you eat ten french fries a day and lead an active lifestyle, you're simply not going to get fatter. If a person has enough money to eat himself to obesity, then he also has the money to remain at the same weight, simply by eating less.

I'm not saying that it's easy to lose or maintain weight; for some people it's very hard. But the "cheap food makes people fat" argument flies in the face of fundamental physical facts.

3 cans tuna = $1.80 ~90 grams protein
1 bag brown rice = $2.55 ~666 grams carb

We're way over on RDA for calories here.

Total stands at $4.35.

Spend $15 on a 90 day daily vitamin so that's $.17 a day and our total now is: $4.52.

Take the additional $3.48 and spend it on fruits, veggies, milk, whatever. Mix it up every day.

I know it's extreme but I'm just illustrating a point. If someone wants to maintain a relatively healthy lifestyle, it doesn't have to be expensive.

^ way to much effort on that...

this thread is stupid.

You forgot to factor in the requisite Chipotle budget, good Sir.

believe it or not but the corn farmers are at fault.

i'm serious too. do a little research it's amazing how corn farmers control the united states.

You've never looked at your diet like that? Aren't you trying to get big and ripped?

of course it makes sense... no one likes to stay hungry after eating. so yeah, you can go to the market and buy a fresh slab of fish, fresh vegetables to make a salad, with fresh fruits for dessert and still have a big, filling (but healthy) meal. or you could go to mcdonalds and pay $4.99 for a big mac, fries, and a soft drink that can be just as filling, but way for fattening.

food that's bad for you is a lot cheaper to process, thus is cheaper than the average healthy food.

edit: and yes, there are some cheap alternatives like tuna and stuff like that, but there are PLENTY more cheap unhealthy foods right next to it.
