i had some noodles at 12... but this was at 4am..

yes, don't eat too much and get on a regular exercise program (or you'll just get fat like many other TAs anyways). Also, being on a computer is the worse thing, esp if it's in your bedroom. Wind down your evening watching tv, no phone calls, internet and eating sugary foods, chocolate, stuff that has caffeine.

If you must go on the net, find *stuff* that will put pleasant thoughts in your mind before murdering the rooster

if u can't fall asleep after 20-25min according to the experts do not keep laying there obsessing over the fact that you can't fall asleep, that's the worse thing u can do...the best thing is to get out of bed and do something like; read a book and drink a glass of warm milk..it will help put you into a sleeping mode...watching tv is a not such a good idea according to the experts...also, if you are familiar with relaxation exercises those can help a lot too....and try to get up at or around the same time every day...even if the previous night you fell asleep really late, try to get up in the morning as you normally would...also avoid eating really big meals right before bed and make sure not to exercise right before bed either..the adrenaline we get from exercising before or close to bed time doesn't help geting ourselves into a sleeping mode...try to exercise earlier in the day....oh and drinkin alcohol before bed will definitely disturb your sleeping pattern even if it might seem to help you fall asleep easier
if you wanna have a snack before bed any type of berries are really good for that as well

sounds like a typical anxiety symptom but i would see a dr. anyways if i were u

i've been having some serious insomnia as of late, which my DR. tells me is b/c of a medical condition i have. what ever u do, don't let your doctor precribe you halcion... it is not fun. i'm still feeling shitty from having to take it a month ago. there's been times were i've been up for 3 or 4 days...

a co worker suggested going to to a natural foods store, and gettin organic apple cider vinegar, honey ( not the billy bee kind), and adding hot but not boiling water to that, and drinking it about a half hour before u hit the hay.

Isn't there a lot of sugar in both those ingredients? Don't think that would do well for somebody who cannot sleep.

up for 3 or 4 days..wooow..you must start hallucinating at some point...have you even considered taking melatonin supplements..that might help a bit

things got pretty tweaky by that point. which is about when my body gave out on me. its not easy working in a kitchen with no sleep for a few days.

well if you're finding that whatever your doctor has suggested for far isn't working..get a second opinion...go see someone else...do some research on your medical condition and how it's related to insomnia...you might come accross some useful info on it that your doctor might not even think of (or even know about). Besides for doctors it's easiest to just put you on some medication with horrible side effect as yours did. I would look into this much further if i were you.

im more inclinded to listen to my hepatologists, as they're more specialized than a run of the mill MD. i've got one at UHN, and Sunnybrook, the two times i got put on halcion it was once by each of them :-S

well whatever helps your sleeping problem...they must have had a good reason to put you on that then..as long as you don't have to use it all the time

thankfully no, and the insane schedule of the holiday season has regulated my sleep patterns nicely, even tho i haven't seen sunlight in ... two weeks >.<

What the hell has happened to your english since you've been over there?

I'm also pretty sure most of us have irregular sleep paterns and it has nothing to do with school.

so it's not just me then. that's good to know. i saw someone post earlier that this happens mostly during the holiday season. yeah, why is that? over the summer i fell asleep in under a minute. but these days i lay awake tossing and turning for a long time. even to the point where i need to get out of bed and walk around bcuz i'm ticked off that i won't fall asleep. my diet is actually healthier than over the summer and my physical activity hasn't dropped that much. it's hard to put my finger on it but i have a feeling that it's directly related to the amount of time i spend being outside or even the reduced amount of daylight. i have tried the wine and melatonin supplements in previous years. they do work, but i refuse to take anything bcuz falling asleep should be a natural process. i'm just stubborn that way.

Physical activity

Do something that will cause you to be physically tired.
Your brain will take the hint and follow.

I know its hard to think of things to do at 4:00 am...
Sounds crazy but try sit ups or push ups in your room - or free weights
Or go for a walk/jog (if you don't live in a sketchy area) - this might also help clear your head of what is most likely plaguing your subconscious and not allowing your brain to RELAKS.

There's also another option that doesn't even require moving from your bed... which I'm not going to state explicitly. lol

How old are you? How long has this insomnia been going on? Are you in school? There's tons of different reasons you might be staying wide awake at night.

But for some simple things you could try...

Eat a healthy serving of turkey a couple hours before bed-time. It's been a while since I've done the research, but turkey either has melatonin in it, or it has something in it that causes your body to start producing melatonin, which is the chemical that makes you sleepy.

Milk also does this, when I started drinking a large glass of chocolate milk about 30 minutes before bed, my sleeping improved a LOT, it also has the added benefit of making you feel 'full', so it's a much better choice than filling up on a large bed-time snack like a lot of people do to get that satisfied, calm feeling you get when you're body is full.

Keep as close to a regular sleeping schedule as you possibly can, even staying up later 2 nights in a week can keep your biological clock screwed up and throw off your sleeping pattern.

Exercise no less than two hours before bed. As many push-ups, sit-ups as you can handle, plus a 10-20 minute jog will have you tired in no time. Stretching is also a HUGE plus, as it relaxes your muscles, tense muscles CAN keep you up all night without a clue in the world as to what's causing it. Also deep breathing, and staring at the middle of your forehead with your eyes closed (I think you know what I mean) will help your mind and body relax.

Jerk it, work it, and merc it, hehe.

Smoking Pot will generally keep you awake for 30-40 minutes, but then you'll burn out and be ready to pass out. But THC inhibits your REM sleep, so even though you're sleeping, you don't enter the deep restorative sleep (dreams) that really makes you feel refreshed in the morning.

Alcohol is worse, you'll crash really fast, then be awake 1, 2, 3 hours later. I've never been a fan of alcohol as a passer-outer.

If you decide to read, don't read anything that's exciting, as it will build your adrenaline and disrupt your sleep. Same goes for TV, I find listening to Sportsnet or The Score all night puts me out faster than anything else. If that fails, try TV Guide

Listen to soothing music, or, strangely enough, Korn and Godsmack make me lights-out when nothing else will make me sleep.

How many things in your room are plugged in? There's a theory that's starting to pick up that says that the energy in the room that comes from electrical things that are plugged in can screw with your subconcious blah blah blah, lots of technical words I'm too lazy to think of right now... Either way, unplug all your shit. I used to have 2 fish tanks, a stereo, TV, Lava Lamp, clock and multiple gaming systems all set up in my room. My sleep improved vastly once I shut down one of he tanks, and unplugged my power-bar for the TV/Stereo/Gaming Consoles. It may have been a mental thing more than any actual evidence of the phantom load theory, but it worked for me.

I've had huge problem with insomnia my entire life, and these are a long list of different things that have helped me get to sleep through the years. Hope they help.

I strongly discourage anyone from going for a run.

You get what's called 'runner's high'. Adrenaline from running that'll keep you from going to sleep.

There's also problem with running at night during winter. More likely you'll slip on black ice and hurt yourself.

Generally I find insomnia to be result of stress. So I try to relax my mind before going to bed. For some reason unless I'm severely stressed, I don't have trouble sleeping

Thus not going for the run if it's within 2 hours of your bed-time. Once the endorphines wear off your body is physically beat and ready for bed.

ummm...i dont think that's such a good idea...exercising right before bed or when tryin to fall asleep only makes things worse...exercise should be done earlier in the day

The high is only temporary... for me anyway.

And yes, I recently heard that it's bad for your lungs... but pounding the sidewalk (provided that it's not icy) in sub-zero temperatures feels f*cking awesome
Always clears the nasal passage and just feels overall refreshing.
