i feel for the people that can't see BSG's special place in mature fantasy. BSG is art, from its camera work to its narrative, this is the best example of the "novel for television" format i am yet to see. season 3 is a bit meh though, but after seeing the film im willing to forgive their lack of plot in favour of characterisation for the time being.

tv series' dont get grittier than this

I'm actually really enjoying season 3. Sure, different than 1 & 2, but very good stuff.

Few sci-fi TV series can beat the X-Files for style. If you're looking for sci-fi substance, you'd be much better off reading books.

they made a sci fi film about sliced bread???

I really liked this movie, and it has me extremely excited for next season. Too bad it will be the last one .

Gee I dunno, sliced bread is pretty neat

that last season was really weak. I loved the first one, and the second one with Pegasus. I want to see Razor, gotta find me a good torrent

No more yowling on message boards late at night at the girls, no more hiding in dumpsters and getting into fights with boys... it'll be all good.

yeah, id prefer a little more, but all good books must deliver their final chapter the last thing you want is some serialised bullshit being trotted out every year til they die slowly and sadly in the pit of despair.

ahem.

that's the way! why not steal the greatest creation in scifi tv history? we certainly don't want them to have the cash to maintain the exceptional quality. that would suck!

if you consider how much of a bitch it is to get it here, and the fact that expectations are low, I'm not gonna waste my money. Maybe I will buy it if I like it.

I don't see how anything could get any better than Sunshine.
After seeing it, I figured it was on a tier of it's own, placing every other space sci-fi film at second rate. There are no space guns or interstellar wars, so maybe it's a bit of a different stroke

cool, never heard of it. what makes it so good?

wtf are you on about? It's not a movie. It's an episode, a special all be it that was televised long before it came out on DVD. Most people that can't watch it live grab it off torrents like EZTV or tvtorrents anyway so this makes no difference.

It's not a movie, it's a special episode.

Not that torrenting episodes is morally right but I'm not waiting 2 years for some shitty channel to pick it up, air it at 1am in the morning and then cut it half way through. Unfortunately that is the world we live in now so torrents are by far the best option.

oh yeah, i just like stirring shit up, you know me i dont really have a problem with people copying things that went to tv, but dvd sales comprise a big % of profits. there's too much mindless shit on tv and i see copying something profound and unique like BSG is really counter-productive.

haha, well its movie-length and doesnt feature as an official part of any season. so im gonna keep calling it a movie, but feel free to continually correct me

First, the trailer...

Obvious are the the visuals, which are amazing, breathtaking and ABUNDANT throughout the entire film.
Boyle took the liberty of hiring physicists to overview the script and film process making sure it was as accurate as possible. The final scene I'm sure you will comprehend to how it procured using the Special Theory of Relativity.
One non-spoiler tidbit I read (as to factual science) was that initially the bomb (which is the size of Manhatten, New York and attached to the spaceship) was so massive, that it created it's own gravitational warp, removing the neccessity to create artificial gravity with a spiraling ship. Eventually the movie studio decided it would just look "cooler" to have the spiraling portions, so that's what you ultimately see in the film. But all this really reminds me of Primer, which I know you enjoyed as well.
There are some WONDERFULLY played characters, that have conflicting interests when it comes to the events that unfold as the film progresses. They are all scientific minds (Mathematicians, physicists, psychologists, engineers and medics) and have different methods to approach the problems that arise. Things do end up getting very haywire and mortal choices do need to be made, which is always emphasized by the sacrifice of saving the entire human race.
I do agree with all the reviews that say that the twist in the last third of the film is a bit wild (maybe even absurd), but I really choose to forgive it.

I saw it on the big screen when it first came out and it visually amazed me. I have it on my hard drive from a torrent and plan to buy it when it comes out, although I wish I had an HD setup :/.

"my head was full of velocities and....shit. I...I'm sorry....I fucked up!"

Sunshine was really, really good.

One of those movies that will be talked about more often as it gets older, I am sure.

However, it was far from being fucking fantastic. I appreciated that it put forth a lot of themes, but it didn't seem to me as though it really explored any of them in particular - it would have done far better to really nail down some really solid stance on mankind. There was no gist, as it would be - which is really super common amongst modern films, especially ones with lofty themes such as science fiction in our apparent world torn between science fact and an uncertain future. I forgive it though because of its production value and inevitable yet interesting scope.

thanks fellas, i'll definitely have to check it out. and rose byrne! yummy yum yum.

theres just not enough quality fantasy on the big or small screen.

watched razor again today, read some reviews. you definitely have to check out the extended version, sounds like some of my fave o-face moments were cut from the televised version.

I've tried watching Sunshine twice after reading about it in the c0r but I struggled every single time. About 30-45 mins into it I always fell asleep I dunno, it just didn't seem that engaging to me. The highlight of the movie, from what I remember, is the depressed suicidal asian. That guy cracked me up.

Posted by stren on Dec-21-2007 12:52:

i just watched sunshine. Many resemblance to both space odyssey's . Although Sunshine lacks in some aspects, it was a great watch.

i really enjoyed sunshine, but i thought it totally fell apart towards the end. shame really, coz i really enjoyed the alien/2001 look and feel of the film. still worthy of checking out, but i wont bother watching it again.
