Defenitly Iriver... 20 bucks more then a crappy brand and you get great interface and controls (S 10 pwns Ipod shuffle). Also a 10 band EQ is nice (rather then the preset shit...). Seriously who wants a "rock" band EQ preset? I'd much rather have "crappy microphones" and "the preset guy was too busy fapping so heres some random eq settings".

ya, the interface is incredible because its totally customizable. it's based off of macromedia flash lite so you can download user-created interfaces or even make your own. this is the theme i currently use:

and ANF... unfortunately, the clix2 doesnt have line-in recording that and expandable memory were the only 2 drawbacks about purchasing it. these were no biggies for me though since i was looking for a small compact mp3 player mainly for gym, running, and work.

well to be honest the in line option isn't nescessary for everyone but its a very nice feature to have. I record most of my stuff at home via laptop, but if you dont want to drag the lappy out its invaluable.

Ferrari, way overpriced but gives a great driving feel. It costs more than equivalent performing cars. People still love them for their driving feel and smoothness.

While Ferrari has some features which indeed may appeal to car lovers, I can't see the same thing applying to an mp3 player.
Still this is a good example, since there are countless idiots who bought a Ferrari just to boost their ego.

The fact that the ipod is so succesful just proves that Apple has a really good marketing department.

...is completely untrue from an objective standpoint. I own one and have had absolutely no issues with the touch interfact, it's very responsive and has never once done something I didn't want it to because of poor touch detection. I send email on it frequently with no issues. Further, it "does" far more than just about any other MP3 player on the market (find me another one that will run all the applications my touch does and I'll eat my hat).

The driving feel comes from all aspects of the player. From the steering feedback to the brake feel. Not the auditory side, although that is a plus. The iPod is very good at keeping the user in touch with what's going on without being overboard about it.

It's not their marketing department that was so successful with this. It their research and interface departments that had the major success. You can advertise a product with as much trendy stuff as you want, but what it comes down to is user response. If you don't have a product that delivers a good experience (interface and ease of use) then you won't have a high seller. Regardless of how much money you throw into marketing.

Take the infomercials for cheesy crappy products as an example of this. They are hip, energy filled, exciting, but how often do you go to someones house and see the product being used? They may be good at what they do, but no matter what they want to think there just isn't a need for it. There was a need for portable music and the research that went into the User Interface turned out to hit the nail on the head.

Ferrari User Interface > Dodge Viper user interface. The viper costs a fraction of what the Ferrari 360 does. In the racing world, the Viper is a head boss, but it lacks the quality and usability feedback that the Ferrari does. That's what makes the Ferrari such a desired car.
