so instead of one disc, you have two. oh the humanity!!

im much more interested in video/sound quality, region coding, prices of the discs and players.

there's a rumour that paramount are using a "get out" clause in their exclusivity contract and switching to bluray.

looks like the the game could be over folks.

yeah but that's a rumour
just like there were rumours warner was going hd dvd. I suppose they would've, had HD DVD paid them more than they got from BDA for bluray ($500 Mil USD?)

Sounds like HD-DVD should have a "no givseys backseys" clause in theirs

TOKYO, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Paramount studios is poised to drop its support of the high-definition DVD (HD DVD) format after Warner Bros studio said it would back the competing Blu-ray format, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

The loss of support from Paramount, which is owned by Viacom Inc (nyse: VIA - news - people ), would likely deal the final blow to the HD DVD format backed by Toshiba Corp (other-otc: TOSBF.PK - news - people ) and put an end to the format war, the newspaper said on its Web site.

Time Warner (nyse: TWX - news - people ) Inc's Warner Bros studio on Friday said it would exclusively release high-definition DVDs in Sony Corp (nyse: SNE - news - people )'s Blu-ray format, marking a major setback to the HD DVD camp.

Blu-ray discs outsold HD DVD by nearly two-to-one in the United States last year, but HD DVD had secured major allies in August when Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG (nyse: DWA - news - people ) Inc said they would go exclusively with HD DVD.

But Paramount is understood to have a clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp that would allow it to change sides if Warner Bros backed Blu-ray, the Financial Times said, citing people familiar with the situation. (Reporting by Nathan Layne)

wow what a coincidence, sunrise who told ps3 owners to get a 'real console' is backing hd-dvd.. no surprise there

lets face it mate bluray fits more, has a faster read rate, is outselling hd-dvd, and nearly has all the studio's support

you lose.. get the fuck over it

Posted by DJ_Ballistic on Jan-09-2008 07:04:

he hates your face

thanks to idiots and anti-competitive practice by sony? (e.g. how many months was it before hd dvd's were sold in retail in australia with all those major chains having an exclusive contract to sony)

quote:
nearly has all the studio's support

yes, sadly it does, and for two reasons.
1) it's not the consumer format - studio's like that region coding is enforced - where as on hd dvd it's not (this enticed Fox to go bluray), and you can't create a backup of the disc
2) they paid out a shit load of money (such as in the case of warner bros, reportedly $500 million..)

you lose.. get the fuck over it

it's not over, but it is a major blow.. the rumours of paramount going bluray only too would likely to spell the end, well for movies anyways. Maybe HD DVD will become a cheap data storage format instead, who knows. but I'll certainly never get a movie in bluray.

so now, be constructive or stfu

I agree with whoever said they just wish one would win, I really couldn't give a shit.

In regards to quality between the two, who the hell notices the difference anyway? It's bound to be so minute that it's irrelevant.

I fail to see why we need to upgrade to a new DVD format anyway, though to be fair, when we upgraded from VHS to DVD I said the same thing, and these days a VHS is basically unwatchable to me.

I'm sure this will be the same thing; after five years of watching Blu Ray/HD DVD, we will be wondering how we ever enjoyed "normal" DVDs.

Meh, fuck DVDs, I'm excited for the release of LASER TELEVISION (still a long way off...)

if you watch something hd, then watch something sd (dvd) it does take some adjustment (but you don't care after 5/10 minutes since you should be by then immersed in the movie), and anyways these days scalers etc are very good, so the gap isn't anywhere as big as it was in the vhs->dvd days, and you need a decent display to start off with.

but oled is here!
well in very small sized screens, for now..

When we're talking about sony ps3's being sold when you buy a bravia xbr and they're starting to keep ahead of sales of xbox 360's and wii's steadily, you don't need to be a smart pkc to work out that ps3's in homes is bluray players in homes.

hddvd has an uphill shit fight to get anywhere quickly. on the weekend at least 3 of my mates went out and brought bravia lcd's and take advantage of the free ps3's. i'm sure if you muliply that out to people that know of this promotion, you pave way for a shit load of players now.

it's promotions like this that gives Sony muscle. not tricky specification and ridiculous claims.

that reminds me of when windows came with IE so you wouldnt have to get netscape.
since when has ps3 been outselling anything?

I think everyone is forgetting the most important thing that would put HD-DVD in the lead.

It's cheaper to produce!

The discs cost much, much less than blu-ray to produce which only means one thing, more profit.

Who knows, the tide could turn.

yes the discs/movies and the players are cheaper to produce and cheaper to buy everywhere else in the world except here (but thanks to no region coding, you can just get your hd dvd's for cheap from the US )

sony have their hands in everyone's pockets.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Jan-09-2008 11:38:

yeah, region coding is an absolute disgrace. still, bluray players will come out that will be region free eventually (if they haven't already?) so i don't suppose its TOO bad.

i dont like people poking around in my expensive equipment. i want a player that does it itself, like my two previous DVD players im certainly not getting a ps3 as my bluray player.

well at the moment the ps3 is the ONLY decent bluray player.
in particular everything else struggles with the menu cos it's freaking java.

but they're considering changing to the HD DVD menu system. lol, and since the spec isn't yet finalised it's possible.

Paramount has officially denied rumors that it will break its exclusivity with HD DVD and switch to Blu-ray. The studio said in a statement that its current plan is to continue supporting the format.

ParamountThe Financial Times claimed that Paramount will use a "get-out clause" in its exclusivity agreement with HD DVD to follow Warner in jumping ship to Blu-ray. The paper cited "people familiar with the situation," and offered little evidence.

hahaha see, see the end isn't here, just shit times for the consumer.

PS3 Christmas Holiday Sales Total 1.2 Million

By YURI KAGEYAMA 2 days ago

TOKYO (AP) Sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 game machine sales totaled 1.2 million in North America during the key holiday season, the electronics and entertainment company said Monday. The performance gave a lift to its Blu-ray video format because the console also works as a Blu-ray player.

Competition is intense among the latest video game machines, pitting Sony Corp. against Nintendo Co.'s popular Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s XBox 360. Despite the strong holiday sales for the PS3, more Wiis have sold than PS3s since the consoles debuted in late 2006.

But the rivalry between the two of the latest video formats Blu-ray and HD DVD appears to be tipping toward the former after Warner Bros. Entertainment, formerly a supporter of the Toshiba-backed HD DVD format, defected to the Blu-ray side over the weekend.

oh and check this new bit of news xbox360 to eventually have a bluray accessory option??? http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/12434.cfm

oh and hbo, new line and other warner companies will stop producing hddvd titles by the end of may...http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/12445.cfm

clearly it's all $$$$ and not which is deemed the 'better' format.

the article seems to contradict your claim

Posted by gumble on Jan-10-2008 14:18:

not really, wiis are a pure gaming device, as nintendo have always been.

therefore, they don't enter the HD debate.
