I remember MDK... never played it though.

Anyone remember Syndicate?

Posted by Gen3r4l1ty on Jan-30-2008 18:22:

Just an FYI, MDK for the PC is abandonware now I believe, which means that its free! Try HERE and do a search. Lots of other free/legal abandonware here as well. Have fun!

Very fun game!!! Didnt play it too much, reminds me so much of Shadowrun (on SNES or Genesis)!

Other hidden gems: (NES) Startropics - Well this one was kind of popular but a great litle rpg, challenging and quite lengthy!

I know there are a whole bunch more, but i cant think of any right now!

Posted by Gen3r4l1ty on Jan-30-2008 19:28:

Shadowrun for the Genesis was loaded with win.

Awesome to see some Phantasy Star series mentions, that's my favorite series of all time (obviously)...

Some other faves of mine:

NES: Power Blade, Metal Storm, Battle of Olympus, Guardian Legend
SNES: Space Megaforce, Lufia 2, Axelay
Genesis: Gunstar Heroes, Landstalker, Ranger-X, GleyLancer
SMS: Fantasy Zone: The Maze
Turbo Grafx: Ys 1-2, Ys 4, Far East of Eden series, Exile, Soldier Blade
N64: Sin and Punishment, Mischief Makers
Saturn: Far East of Eden 4, Radiant Silvergun, NiGHTS, Galactic Attack/Layer Section
PS1: Star Ocean 2

Connerman: Rez is OUT TODAY on 360!!! I'm gonna go write a post on it!

Ok top of my list here for a game that was so overlooked but was so incredible for its time, that I'm still today shocked it was merely a puff in time.

Sinistar: Unleashed on the PC

The game, now nearly 9 years old, look amazing even today. It was way ahead of its time and had that old school, arcade shooter feel to it.

Vandal Hearts for PS1...one of the best (if not THE best) turn based strategy RPG of all time. I frackin love this game. Great story...nice effects..lots of blood...full 3D camera control...awesome maps and tons of different character classes to experiment with. A must play for strategy fans.

I hardly ever beat RPG's, I can count the number I have on one hand, and guess what, one of them fingers represents this game. Incredibly awesome, Konami struck gold when they released this piece of platinum software back in the 90's. Tons and tons of fun.

Vandal Hearts 2 was a little different, though, as the enemies moved at the SAME time as you did, unlike this one where you took turns.

yeah, phantasy star on the megadrive was wicked. "shining in the darkness" was a "3d" dungeon scrolling RPG which was awesome as well, i loved the storyline.

A great game here as well. I didnt own it, but a friend of mine did and I can admit that this went very much under the rader. I wanna say they made a sequel, but I'm not entirely sure.

yea, still have 2 -4 for gen as well. All classics in my mind.

I hear the cartridge of the 4th can go for upwards of $200 on eBay. Honestly, though, I never really got into it, I'm not really an RPG gamer, and I got these as gifts from a friend who happened to sell his Genesis (and he didnt know the value these games had mwuhahaha). That being said, I DID get into Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast, not as much as a lot of people, but enough that I knew what I was talkin about.

I'm lovin the tastes you have, I forgot about nearly all of those games. Cant say I've played all of them, but Mutant Hockey League and MDK are some favs that the rest of the world seemed to forget about.

I am FORCING my roomie with his huge as all hell HDTV to buy this for his 360, I cant even fathom how good it will look. Oh, and his stereo, the one that causes noise complaints from neighbors 4 doors down...imagine the sound on that. Wow.

You might be thinking of Shining Force, for which they made a sequel. It was the same style as shining in the darkness (characters and story) but it was a more traditional 3rd person RPG rather than a 1st person. Both of the Shining Forces were also excellent.

Hmmm...I very much know of Shining Force 1 + 2, the second was one of the few games I had for the Genesis back when in the grade school days, so I'm pretty sure that's not what I'm thinking of, I always thought they made a Shining in the Darkness 2 or something of that sort, maybe it only came out in Japan or maybe I dont even know what I'm talking about.

But it IS very easy to confuse the two, how many games have Shining as a predominant word in the title...

I also want to say that Shining Force 3 for Saturn is one of the hardest games to find. And when you find it, you are likely paying very high triple-digit dollars.

Posted by verndogs on Jan-30-2008 22:58:

One of my favorite shooters on the NES, partially because you had to work for your powerups (trying to keep bells from floating down) and had the most random enemies: Icicles, Watermelons Boss, Jukebox, Hangers

Posted by trunks1022 on Jan-30-2008 23:19:

those moby games images are t3h hotness

Earthbound for SNES, one of my favorite games of all time. But not sure if its one of those hidden gems, I didnt know alot of people who ever played it, but between RPG and Gaming enthusiast, alot of them played it.

Dayem... if there is a Shining in the Darkness 2, that might be reason to dig out the 'ol genesis and start hittin ebay! (or maybe check the emu sites ) I'll have to look in to that.

(as it is, this thread is already making me want to dig out some old gems)

hehe, hardly an "unknown" game though

who bought (was it bullfrog?) i think maybe sierra did. anywayz, would be awesome to see a sequel. first game i ever encountered where you could flame-throw innocent civilians!

Posted by Fledz on Jan-31-2008 23:26:

Bullfrog was bought by Sierra yea. Man Bullfrog was sick, Theme Hospital ftw! I think they had Dungeon Keeper too.

Syndicate was great man and definitely not unknown. What about Syndicate Wars, wasn't that the sequel?

i remember having this dicussion before, and i cant remember. i thought it was more of an expansion, but i could be wrong like i was last time? either way, i never played anything that looked like a sequel (ie improved graphics, interface, new units weapons etc)

I played the demo of the PC version of this years ago. I thought it was a good time. I think the reviews were horrible, but what the hell do they know.

Syndicate was the first game, Syndicate: American Revolt was the expansion for the game, and Syndicate Wars was the sequel. Nothing better than blowing up a building ful of innocent civilians

Yay, my memory still serves me well.

God I loved driving the cars and running people over

Pontifex

not a game, game perse, but definitely one of the most addicting puzzle/physics/games out there.

you have to build a bridge with set materials/money for a train over a river. gets harder and harder, try the demo|

I have fond memories of plowing down 2 dozen people and a building with a 4 man mini-gun barrage.
