If anything his would hurt them. It's very obvious that Beatport puts emphasis on some releases over others, this move will basically make the smaller labels (which usually tend to have better release, imo) more obsolete. They could essentially push small start up labels out of the business. |
Well, it's true that a lot of the banner space on Beatport does seem to favor certain artists and labels that are doing well. I've only had my label advertised in the Progressive section twice in the 2 years that I've been running things. But even with the lack of banner space, you still have the privilege of having your tracks listed by week of release and most people use that section and the Top 100 to find most tracks. The first week is crucial, for even a basic plug for your track on MySpace & Facebook is enough to generate at least $200 in sales alone. And in some genres (House Chart excluded), all you have to do is sell 30-50 copies of one mix in a week and it's on their Top 100 charts.
For any startup, the key is to just keep releasing tracks on a regular basis. Even for my label, initial sales for the first few project were slow because nobody knew what SoundGroove was all about. But it eventually grows momentum and now making the minimum is not a major issue.

Yeah, I usually get about 100-120k/sec from Beatport (while downloading 4 tracks at a time, i.e. 400-500k/sec.). |
Yea, I'm about the same. Takes me longer to navigate through the site that to actually dl my tracks.

I'm hoping a lot of labels will start their own online shops in the future. Don't have to care for Beatport then anymore.

I am guessing that is due to the opening of beatsource.com, the hip-hop offshot of Beatport, which is supposed to open soon.
