In many countries, people are not even aware how sensitive the word negro is in US. Most of the said fruits/nuts/chocolate names were probably given several centuries ago and have now become part of the ordinary language. People don't think in racially sensitive terms when using these words.

In India for example, people will not see the difference between African-American and Negro simply because they are not aware that one of them is a racial slur and the other is not.

The kid admits using the word, why can't the teacher? I mean it's a word with horrible connections but ...

Either it is ok FOR A HUMAN to use the "n-word" and "white trash" or it isn't. Otherwise if you base your acceptability of using the word on race then you are (somewhat obviously) RASIST!
