Ya, I made a poor assumption in what you wrote...I thought you meant that it was continually going up.

So I turned on the news this morning to find that the gas prices have risen once again. The reason: the high cost per barrel of oil. But is this really the reason? Is it greed? The financial experts are citing that the reason is for a refinery explosion in Texas and tensions between the US and OPEC countries. Also OPEC is threatening to reduce crude production thus increasing the demand and increasing the price. Maybe it is time for government intervention but will that really curve the problem? The price in Buffalo is 86 cents per litre on Monday whereas in Toronto it was 1.05.9. Why is there such a difference in price? TAXES!!! We won't see a decrease, at least not anytime soon. Bring on the Hybrids and electric cars. Does anyone else have any comments or opinions related to this?

a oil refinery in Texas went up in flames? That could be why a lil.

Posted by malek on Feb-20-2008 21:53:

obviously its the consumers fault that this refinery went up in flames and we must pay for it.

I think I'll disagree with this one.

Do you know why the prices in Europe are so high? (and really, it's only Europe). Simply because people are prepared to pay that much (your supply/demand curve). In Yurop, the average person drives alot less. Hence, they can afford to pay more. In reality, they probably spend _the same_ amount of money on gas per week, as we do here, but buy a lesser amount of it. That follows from the "approximately" the same amount that people get paid there (at least in Western Europe).

In Eastern parts, gas is cheaper. But people _can't_ afford to drive as much. So it has to be cheaper for them (OPEC) to extract the same amount of cash per capita with relation to the salary and volume bought.

In North America, you, me, and everyone else is prepared to pay a buck, maybe a buck-10 for gas - simply because we buy more. However, when the going gets tough, people do start being conscious, and take transit and such. With that, the amount extracted per capita is still the same.

You see in either of these cases, the prices cannot fluctuate too much. Make it too expensive in North America, some people will take transit, and will telecommute and what have you. So the net profit is the same...

I dunno, this is the way it always made sense to me... Dunno if it sounds right to you.

gas over 95 cents is outrageous...and i drive a 4 cylinder cavalier, so its really good on gas, but still its a bitch paying for gas at 109.9.

im just waiting for the next few years where we get cars that run completely on batteries and run 500 km a charge and 0% emissions, 0 use of gas...i dont like polluting the environment and i dont like spending money on gas and helping oil companies make billions, those ******s.

Don't forget to blame the futures traders. They bid up the price of oil based on the most silly news. Supply and demand alone does not govern the price of oil, but rather the irrationality of investors.

it went down to 117 here, now bumped to 123!!!!1 i don't understand.

Oil went down today

I don't think it could handle 500km (although I could be mistaken) but the EV1 was a fully functional, legal electric car that did not produce any harmful toxins; it was leased out by GM and made available to the public in the 1990s. Eventually, GM forced every single leasee of the EV1 to return the car or face the prospect of legal sanctions; once returned, GM had each EV1 crushed.

ur wrong, do u ever watch daily planet or stuff on discovery channel? they have cars/trucks/suvs etc....that were running on batteries inside the engine and could go 500km a charge, while still being able to go up to like 120km/hour and the same acceleration etc..when u get home, plug it in for the night and ur good to go the next day, u could never go empty...they got the technology and protypes and everything...its the oil companies and governments who are dicking around here........

LOVE Stayner gas stations!

Always 3-4 cents cheaper than Collingwood, and usually 5-10 cents cheaper than Toronto!!

Gas was $1.01 this week when prices rose (gas was $1.05/1.06 here in Collingwood and heard on news all week gas was like $1.09/1.10 in Toronto and surrounding area!)

Before the gas jump this week, gas was $0.97 last Friday when I drove down to Toronto (gas was like $103-$105 in Toronto )

The Universe Bless Stayner!
