-- "Subway ride darkens as teenagers turn ugly"

Young Offender's Act has only told the kids that if they break the law, all they get is a slap on the wrist.

| Originally posted by StereoPrincess i wonder what they were on. it just sickens me. and i bet they were all the size of adults so anyone that says they would have taken on these kids is dead wrong. they would kick your ass in a second and not give a shit about it since they are protected under young offenders act. i didn't get beaten and i am an upstanding individual. edit: lol. |
As awful an event as this story is, I couldn't help but notice what a horribly written article this is. This guy is a regular contributor? Brutal.
so seven teenagers get on the subway and his next sentence is "here comes trouble"? because seven teenagers together is *always* bad news!
"hold onto your hat" and "thing got ugly then"...those are some insightful lines.
Is there really a need to further sensationlize this story by inserting additional drama and cliches? the facts paint a clear enough picture of what happened. Maybe comment on what else could be done in that situation, advocate for additional security options to riders, question why this happens...something. Insetead, he finishes with this gem:
"...and yes, those kids had a weapon. Teenaged rage."
so this article recounts a negative event and offers nothing else other than implying that groups of teens are clearly up to no good and we can do nothing about it.
weak.

My dad used to get physical with me when I was young, but it was only for my own good. It damn sure kept me in line. I got used to him yelling at an early age, but also feared a good smack.
I definitely wouldn't behave as well today if he didn't bring me up the way he did
if that hoebag threw a punch at me, the 'dont put your hands on women' rule would get broken, quickfast.
this sounds less to do with being an issue about teenagers and more about being an issue about mental patients of any age. Most teenagers and older people dont behave this way. I dont like how age has been implicated here when this person clearly has mental problems.

| Originally posted by Invasionmix lol I'm 230 lbs and I have a black belt, but if I was sitting on that bus I would of mind my own business call the cops or get off and call the cops. Obviously these teenagers are a little out of control so who knows what they can do, or what weapons they can have. I may be able to take two maybe three of them but the 4th one would knock me down and I'll be helpless. |

im all for giving a good whooping. i got a good share of ass whoopings, ear tugs, tung tiu (dunno how to spell it, but the feather duster thingy), many spoons were broken on me. I was a goody goody nerd but to balance that out i was also a bad ass kid. without that discipline i would be lack of respect. Its one of the things i treasure, my ability to be open minded, to respect others as I expect to be respected, have a mind of my own... i personally hate the whole emo kid generation. i had a death threat put on me in highschool by one of them. i gave that kid a good whooping when he approached me. he got expelled that day for having a knife
How did this turn from an unruly kids, to a beating thread?
IMO this is just an isolated incident. With the number of good kids out there, I don't think we have to be worried about being subjected to this type of behaviour. I ride the subway 2-4 times a day and most youths act just fine.
Granted there are bad apples out there, but that is true for any era, any time period.
The real problem with the subway is that most people are not willing stand up for what is right and just. That happens way more often when a crime is committed and nobody comes forward to help, or to be a witness.
I think those kids should be fully charged and banned from using the TTC. They have videocameras on the premises, it should be possible to identify them, what station they got on and where they got off (I think the article mentioned it was College station). Then, if the cops can't find them, just publish their picture on the evening news, newspapers, contact High Schools, etc. The "Young Offenders Act" criteria about how their identity has to be protected is bullshit IMO, it shouldn't be enforced, because what they did was a serious physical assault, verbal abuse to several people and uttering threats (??). They also inconvenienced all the other passengers on the other lines because the subway would have been stalled waiting for the paramedics to arrive to take care of the injured person, so that would have slowed or stalled down the whole system. To dispatch the ambulance would have cost money too, in addition to the extra costs to the TTC. I know for a fact that if you get convicted of assault on the TTC, you get banned from using it for a certain period of time (not that it ever happened to me, lol), so if those "kids" get caught, I would enforce that rule 100%, and in addition, make them work to pay for the extra costs of the ambulance, and to pay damages to the injured person (the court could determine how much). Just send them to enforced labour and then garnish their wages until their debt to society is fully paid, like they do in Singapore, heh
And make them wear an orange vest with the details of their crime while they are working to pay their debt, I heard that that's what they do in Singapore as well...
ffs - this whole new school parenting thing... dont touch your kids... give them "timeout"
they mock your timeouts. they scoff at your "no nintendo for a week". (they usually find it anyway)
if yer not prepared to lay the smackdown, don't add to the population count

There's an old expression,"sometimes you have to let your kids touch the stove". How true. You can tell the kid all they want not to touch it because they'll get burned, but how will tey ever know what 'burned' is without feeling it.
Likewise, how will they ever know not to swear at thier parents unless they get a good whack out of it? It's like our cushy justice system, all warnings, no follow-through.
My kids are gonna be beatin's, and be better people for it...like me.
Wooden spoons, spatulas and the good old right hand are what developed my behaviour as a child, and I see no problem with that.
