maybe things have changed, but when i was in venice about 10 years ago the canals were horribly polluted...very beautiful city, but didn't smell too good...people were tossing trash into the water and boats were leaking gas everywhere. A real shame, but kind of ruined the romantic image for me.

I was thinking the same thing. When I was there it was architectually beautiful but the canals were disgusting and the smell was just terrible. I remember going down the canals and seeing dead rats, turds, and condoms all over the place....really ruined it for me.

It has been 16 years since I was there and I know at that time they were already starting to do things to clean up the canals. Back then all sewage from the houses was just dumped straight into the canals and we were told there was over 10 feet of raw sewage in the bottom of the canals. I am sure they have done a lot to clean up the area in 16 years. It was summer when I was there too so that could have been part of it.
