The labels generally decide when they ask for it to be categorized. Many labels will label tracks things they're not in order to generate sales, however (and others just don't care). |
Yup thats the way it works but beatport can still change it to whatever they want.

Conceptually, I like this whole awards for artists thing but it's not really accurate at all, so it's kinda useless.

i'm pretty sure it's the label that labels them.
sometimes it's simply to get an EP into a few different genre catagorys.
like one release with 4 tracks will have 2 in trance and 2 in progressive house...when all four should probably go into prog house.
EDIT: upon further review of the thread, someone already beat me to my above post. lol

i'm assuming that's how they already did the best tracks based on sales, but to do that for best artist categories would make it statistically biased.
a few examples;
if someone sells an album 1000 copies the ten tracks do 10000 sales but 7 of the tracks may be only average
if one producer does 300 tracks in the year and they all sell a few hundred but are pretty weak it stacks against someone who released only a few absolute top quality smashes
and in the case of a huge track (say adam k and soha's twilight which won prog category) with two or more producers would you split all the numbers or would they each get the full amount of points?
things like these would stack the odds against good producers with people who can turn out a lot of volume. quantity vs quality, and the "best" implies it should be about quality.
