This isn't 'So you KNOW you can DJ' ... it's 'think you can DJ'

It more than a challenge if Mojo enters mang! It's like climbing Everest without oxygen .. most people friggin DIE trying ..

Posted by Nsonic on Mar-08-2008 01:56:

Don't think this was mentioned, but afaik, the scoring system is something along the lines of

50 points for skill
50 points for 'promotability' which is essentially 1 point for each person that comes through on your list.

And i think the place opens at..8?
quote:
Format:

After receiving all applications, the Myplace team will allocate 3 up and coming DJs a 1 hour set each, between 9pm-12am every Tuesday. 9 weeks of heats will be held, with a total of 27 DJs having a spin in front of the Myplace crowd and judges.
Each week a winner will be decided (criteria below). This winner will see receive a cash prize (TBA) and progress to one of three Semi-Finals.
Three Djs will again fight it out in each Semi-Final, the respective winners progressing to the Grand Final and receiving a larger Prize.
And finally, the 13th week Granny will be held on Tuesday May 27. A special guest DJ will help the So You Think You Can DJ panel judge the winner, and will later play in the main room.

Grand Prize: A large cash prize and a weekly Myplace residency.

Criteria to register/apply:

Your own belief you can play to the crowd and win your respective heat.

So You Think You Can DJ judging criteria:

DJs will be rated out of 100 points. The DJ awarded most points will win the heat.

10points: Track selection
10points: Technical Skill (ie. Mixing, effects, layering etc.)
10points: Originality
10points: Crowd Response
10points: Performance
50points: Promotability

= Total out of 100.

Judging Panel:

Will include headline and resident DJs, and Myplace/Room promotional teams

quote:
Each DJ will be given 50 entry passes to the night (5 frees, 45 g/list entry) they play. The number collected will be tallied to give a promoting score out of 50. Hence, 50% of their mark will be based on what they do behind the decks, and 50% based around how many people they pull to the club (whether that be because of their music, loyal friends, interest in Myplace, or if they are a good "promoter").

quote:
Basically, the idea behind it is so that no-one can win by being just a good dj and bringing down no people.
If you get 50/50 for the djing part, but bring no people, someone who brings 50 people, but only gets 1/50 for djing still beats you.

Dj competition; no.
Promoter competition; yes.

and on a related note, if you're more interested in listening to trance, the front room of Room will have monthly invite-only trance nights starting next week. msg me for details/guestlist

Posted by Philby on Mar-08-2008 07:27:

wow
50% of your mark is based on how many people you bring personally.
thats crazy!!

1 hour set in a club would be mad! as long as you dont get all nervous and fuck it up...i was thinking it would be one of those '15 minute cram as much stuff as you can' jobs

well to me anyway...i think i should have that covered though, just gotta get all the hot girls i serve at chaddy to come along

Posted by EgosXII on Mar-08-2008 11:09:

lol, so obviously this is just a publicity stunt to make money if it's 50% based on amount of people...

ah well, bit of fun i spose: deffinitly not playing to win
funzies all the way!

the guest-list thing should be interesting around here, since half the people not playing will probly be on all our lists

on that note: ben, you're coming in on mine, yeah??

Posted by Dj_Es-Dva on Mar-08-2008 11:23:

I wonder if buying all the guestlists to get 50 would be a good idea, then you can get that money back from the grand prize assuming its not monopoly money.

Hey Brother, I am going and there is no bigger n00b then myself so dont worry - worst comes to worst, you gonna end up second biggest train-wrecker...

#*^@ing oath, that is crazy. However, 1 hour set in the ROOM regardless of how many people are there is an excellent opportunity, n00b or not. Plus, if someone is a worthy DJ, it is usually the people in the industry who can tell before the public so even if you bring only your partner, if you worthy, it can only be a matter of time before you get a residency somewhere...regardless if you miss out on the prize money!

well, i'm DJ Trainwreck, so not too sure about that, but you've got yourself a trainwreck competitor!

that is spot on

Posted by wavemotion on Mar-09-2008 09:37:

I'm struggling to keep a straight face just reading the "50 points for promotability" bit!

LOL

So really, you could bring in 50 people and not even know how to plug in your headphones, and still have a decent chance of winning the competition??

FAAARK, I'd love to see that happen!!

Posted by Nsonic on Mar-09-2008 13:22:

Room has a standard setup (1000mk3's, 1200's, djm800) and 2 dvjs. Pretty fun to play in, and the booth has just been moved so it overlooks the dancefloor. Place should look awesome once the plasmas go in.

Also, i heard that the guy running saturdays (where i play, *ahem*)at Room is gonna be one of the judges (not sure), and

But yeah, definitely worth the experience, and if people notice you, thats awesome.

Who of you is actually in the comp?

Posted by vman83 on Mar-10-2008 00:15:

Yeah i think so

quote:
Due to a massive So You Think You Can DJ? response (120+ applications), Myplace has decided to postpone the first heat of the competition and hold a wildcard draw tomorrow night. Hence, a further 9 DJs will get a crack in the competition - 36 DJs in total, 9 heats, 4 DJs per heat.

Posted by PauLie_C on Mar-10-2008 21:14:

50% promotability lol

that says it all.

here are some tips boys:

Bring as many people as you can
Dont worry about perfect beat mixing
Play shitty electro house music
Bring as many people as you can
Dont worry about layering etc etc
Bring as many people as you can

Ohh and one last one....

Bring as many people as you can.
