Unfortunately, a lot of the general public are so ignorant about electronic music that a genre-specific term like "techno" can serve as a synonym for any style of electronic music they encounter, which is likely to be the most mainstream tip of the iceberg: namely, acts like Scooter and Dj Sammy.

People in America, Germany, the UK and everywhere else misuse "techno" in this way. Techno is a genre, and none of those artists belong to it. Simple as that.

Tell it to all of those millions. Like I said I'm not going to discuss it again. I don't disagree with you, but also don't agree completely. I think there are many examples were in time the name has changed and got a second meaning which actually has been adopted by more people, but is nothing like the original and first.

"Techno" was, at times, wrongly used during the 90s (possibly by ignorant journalists) as an unbrella term, in order to describe any form of EDM. It was the wrong usage though, one that was performed out of ignorance, since "Techno" was ALWAYS a specific genre of EDM.

I don't think only by journalists. More by the producers themselves. They all claim to make techno. Compare it to
"Jeep". Most Jeep's are not really Jeep's. But who actually cares nowadays that I call my Suzuki Vitara a Jeep, while I know it isn't one.....

I am well aware of the fact that techno denotes a sepearte genre of EDM alltogether, but I've always used the term to refer to EDM in general and will continue to do so out of habit. You'd don't have to belittle me by calling me a clueless folk-y persaon. It's just easier to say I listen to "techno" than "electronic dance music" around where I live because having to go in depth to explain the myraid of genres just takes way too much damn time. If you want to be elitist then go for it, but I accept language as something determined by the people who speak it and therefore the "incorrect" meaning of techno as well. It's sad I can never post more than 3 times on this forum without being flamed for some trivial little thing.

Not always. For example in the early 90's (till '93 or so) a lot of people (not only noobs or ignorants) referred to all trancey music as techno, since the "trance" label wasn't that widespread and trance was basically hypnotic techno (and it was played in techno sets in techno clubs, released on techno compilations bla bla...). The same thing was with commercial techno (the term used in early eurodance days), and acid (the term used to describe all acid dance music). And some of those people (just like the guy above me) later when genre and subgenre boundaries got more defined just refused to use these new labels. Even now I have some friends (who are listening to EDM since the early 90's and have more knowledge than 90% of today's know-it-all folks) who refer to Age Of Love or Barbarella as great techno tunes etc.

Trance used to be called trance and before that acid house? Why call it techno? Thats just ignorant.

I wasn't particularly referring to you, but I don't see why you should perpetuate false information just because lots of other people do.

I've noticed a lot of people in the past few years referring to dance music as a whole as "techno", not because they're ignorant or because people in their area call it that and it's easier to do so out of habit, but simply because to them, there is no other dance music bar techno.

The kind of people I'm talking about don't bother with house, trance, breaks or anything else, so to say "techno" always implies the music they like, just like if an English soccer fan says "football", they are 100% referring to the English version, and not rugby or American or Australian rules.

If they specifically wish to refer to something outside of their usual sphere of narrow-mindedness, they will specifically say, "trance". I guess you could call these people snobby tech-heads.

I've got 21st century trance 3 and I think you can get a lot more cheesy than that. Apart from Public domain and sandstorm, I don't think it is particularly cheesy. Yeah there are some big hits on there but that don't make it cheese.

You might wanna check out 21st Century Trance 2. Much better than the 3rd volume in my opinion with a lot of excellent under-rated tracks.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with cheese, the first techno I ever started listening to was like scooter/DJ Sakin/DJ Sammy/Ian Van Dahl not to mention a bunch of cheesy eurodance artists. It is strange that you thought the trance you listened to before was too linear compared to that though, But you have to realize the word "trance" is thrown around alot by people to refer to songs that are nowhere near trance-like.

x2, nothing wrong with cheese just as long as you understand it's not real trance. i admit i like cheese, but i also like real trance.
