I got into trance in 96/97 (mainly goa), and started buying cds and signles. In 2000, I bought my first decks and mixer... so at age 14 I began to mix. Didn't get good at it tilla round 15/16... and now here I am, 23 and kicking ass. Tho now I prefer a digital and analog mixing system.

i grew up in the 80's looking up to hip-hop dj's and breakdancing, i was just amazed and drawn to it. so obviously i spin trance and not hip-hop but i still love the old school hip-hop dj's, not so much the new ones.

Lost my mind n sanity at Aria, Montreal
It's neva coming back...
But each time I spin, I channel that Aria vibe into my sound and it's like I'm rejuvenated back to when I was 18.
It's sorta like a blast from the past going on.
Aria.......................

Long story short, my uncle was a big time resident dj in a club in Brazil in his early years. He showed me his old ass set up one day, after I was already listening to daft punk and some euro dance pop cheese on my own, when I was turning 14 and I fell in love. Couple months later he gave me all his gear and that's when went down the rabbit hole. None of the gear works anymore but boy I still wanna keep that junk..

I've always had an intimate passion for the music...but quite frankly what did it for me was my first time @ Space and saw Oscar G tear that main room into fuccin bits...From then on, I know that I wanted to do the same thing

armand van heldens song 'koochy' - first rave i ever went to was a massive and walked in and koochy was playing and saw everyone was dressed hip and cool and thought finally some pimp shit.

I gained an interest in DJ'ing when I was about 13, around the same time that I was transitioning from Hip-Hop and Top-40 to cheesy dance/Trance music. I started downloading various mixing programs such as PCDJ and Traktor, and would call into the local Hip-Hop station on the weekends, during the little noon hour where they had an actual DJ in, and try to suggest different types of transitions into different tracks (yeah, ).

After a while I progressed to listening solely to dance music and whored Tiesto like crazy. A few years passed by and I came across Zabiela. Everything he did was what really fascinated me; the fact that it wasn't just track-to-track and still sounded great. I think that whole aspect is what really motivated me to get gear. I bought one CDJ and would mix back and forth (sans EQs) between that and whatever I had playing on Traktor on my PC. Then I picked up another CDJ + Xone:62, and eventually an EFX-500.

Now I'm at the point where I have two broken CDJs and one functional one. Until I can afford new ones my current setup is a borrowed Radium-49 keyboard, Ableton and my EFX.

Sort of Related:

I mentioned that I used really lame DJ software before I got decks, and I cannot stress enough how helpful I found them to be. Sure, you can't really learn how to beatmatch with them. That's a given. However, they helped me to define what I liked to play, how to create flow, and how to phrase-match. Once I picked up my decks the only thing that I needed to do (and was a piece of cake) was learn to beatmatch, as I'd already taught myself everything else. To this day I highly recommend using cheap DJ software while you're saving for gear.

Actually, I learned to beatmatch on Traktor. But, I went in with the intent of doing so... I did everything manually so that I could learn the skill and not rely on the computer. It worked... I can beatmatch other media too.

I started listening to EDM back in 99 around the time of the EM World Tour. I kept on listening and then I got into ASOT back around '03 and that's where I really started listening to the actual transitions themselves. I got a copy of Virtual DJ and mixed on my computer for a few years. That helped me to learn phrasing and the eqs. Finally, I '06, I bit the bullet and bought cdjs and a mixer. I've since added a midi controller and a laptop with Torq.

I will say this though, there is nothing like learning by your ears FIRST vs. just using a DVS with visual aids to help. Forcing myself to do it ears only made all the difference.

I messed around with atomix and virtual dj back in 02/03 but found it boring on a pc... fast forward half a decade later, I got my friend interested in DJ'ing somehow (probably all the gigs I dragged her out too haha) and once I saw her setup, I was damn I want to DJ too! few months later I got my mixer & CDJs. This past February we had our first real gig playing an early time slot for San Francisco trance pioneers, Mars & Msytre reunion gig. Been doing happy hour randomly since then at 2 clubs in SF

I'm not perfect with CDJs yet but once I am along with getting a uc-33e, I'm moving to a mixture of laptop and CDJs (just in case laptop dies) cause I'm getting lazy at CD burning/labeling

it was as i dancing under the dj booth Tiesto was playing under, he did the jesus pose and sprinkles of dust descended from his armpits onto my face, this was the moment.

for real though its just a natural progression.

haha, reading david micheal's post reminded me of when i first started, i too started on traktor, i was just starting college and i had my laptop at the time, i installed traktor, started learning, i even started playing my first house parties at the time, it was all downhill from there

we would setup this huge guitar amp in my friend's living room, i'd set my laptop on there and hook them up and play all night while we got drunk... wow that was so long ago now that i think about it, 7 or 8 years ago, time flies when you're having fun

i actually started with traktor too. pirated version of course. i had a bunch of pirated mp3s too. then after using the pirated version of traktor for a while, a notification pops up saying that it'll delete all my mp3s if i don't stop using the pirated version!
i was so scared. i immediately uninstalled traktor and started saving for proper gear.
also since getting proper gear i haven't used a single pirated mp3 to dj with.

Well i guess i just started off DJ'in naturally. I've been to a couple of clubs in my local hometown, watching them scratch, and do remixes. My favorite part was the scratching. It's just like pure raw music. I also tried using softwares like Traktor Scratch, Ableton Live and Reason 4, meh, but i couldn't master it. guess i still need more training. Does anyone like to do remixes or songs on vinyls rather than laptops?

Back in '96 I had a friend I was in highschool with that just picked up a proper setup and his cousin had been doing it for years. So I had access to all kinds of proper knowledge and quality tools. Id trainwreck for a while then started to get my ear to work right. In the meantime Id slowly build my record collection and get my own setup sorted.

It always looked interesting to me. At that time, couldnt afford it. I started collecting CDs and ripping them on to my comp. One day, came across OTS CD Scratch.. the original 1200 lol. That got the juices flowing but definately wasnt enough to interest me much more. It was fun to screw around tho.

Few years later, a guy I work with happens to be a DJ, and has been for a few years. He gave me a few points and let me play around on his equipment. Months later, after feeling more confident with the basics, I knew I was ready to get my own eq. Instead of vinyl, I went with CDJs.

I think it'll be my 3rd year DJing. Love every moment of it still. Should have bought my eq sooner and didnt marry my wife. Oh well.. at least I can still sneak away and mix a few tracks every night

Listened to DJ doboy mixes and was obsessed with how the songs flowed together. Later learned that my best friends cousin owns the largest mobile DJ companies in california. I convinced my parents to by me some crappy TT's n a mixer for my next b-day, and then it was history.
