anyway. It's actually easier if it has a break beat before the 4x4 than beatless before the 4x4. It's not hard to mix breaks with 4x4 (all though the breaks are still in 4/4 time it just doesn't have the kick on the 1,2,3,4) because the breaks will still be at the same tempo with same phrasing (hopefully...if not a good dj can adjust). If the beginning is just beatless it's much harder to tell whether your bars match up before the beat comes in. I like doing mixes always in the beat so if I'm gonna mix a track with a beatless intro in it I'd do it something like this.
1. Match the tempo of the record to be mixed with the record playing.
2. Maybe make sure the phrasing of the intro is normal and when the 1st beat of the beat comes in it's at a normal beginning of a bar.
3. Figure out when I want the beat of the new record to hit with the beat of the playing record and figure out when I need to start the record to be mixed.
4. Start the record to be mixed at the right place. Usually would have the bass down so the beats don't totally clash once they come in unless I'm gonna bring the bass of the playing record down as the new records beat kicks in.

Not sure how clear that is...but maybe it will help understand the difference between an intro with beats and an intro without beats.

I don't see how it's a matter of skill, because if the phrases aren't conventional, it's simply impossible to phrase-match with a conventional track. No amount of skill in the world can change where a phrase starts.

Take the breakdown of the track (needs to be 2-4 minutes in length at least) and loop it for 16 bars. Include a countdown, a vocoder voice promising a cloud ride to Narnia, and then bring in an 8-piece string gaggle to play the theme song from The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
