Alex, last year we had a 9 straight smog days in the middle of the winter in Montral. Did you know that 100000 homes use wood as the main mean of heating on the island alone??? (thats like half of the Greater Montreal Area).

And I doubt frankly that they are hippy friendly.

What about making them illegal? of course not, its too bohemian... but lets tax the fuck out of car drivers, no one will complain.

And you're right, in Europe, it cost twice because they need less of it, people literally live on top of each other and don't need the car as we do here.

We have alot of space in north america, no need to live like rats in 400sqf condos.

I didn't know that many people used fire places as their main source of heat, I honestly had no idea it could be THAT many.

And I am agreeing with you on the rest of what you said, my points were the same as yours, people live further from the cities here and can afford to do so, that's why the notion of taxing the fuck out of car drivers doesn't make sense here yet. Our transit services simply aren't good enough to get everyone where they need to go, on time and cheaply. Why? Because we don't need our transport services to do that for us yet, like you said, it's still cheap to own and maintain a car here compared to elsewhere. THAT was my whole point, the hippies should focus their energy elsewhere, and quit bitching about all the drivers since that's just not going to change until gas prices here are as outrageous as abroad.

Like I said previously, the problem isn't centered around one offender, there are many contributing factors to pollution. And it will take many different (and smaller) solutions to reduce pollution and make us "cleaner" so to speak.

For once I'm surprised the sensationalism hasn't been the factor here for making people aware of the growing environmental problem, instead I think it's more the frequency of the discussion and the "rational" scientific reports that have made people realize that while the problem isn't quite as serious as the crazy hippies make it out to be, it's still a growing problem that needs fixing, and that it can be fixed with only minor lifestyle changes.
