The principal of the matter -- weather one essentially agrees that a decrease is reasonable, logical or has sufficient merit.

I'm well over 21, Leese, but I still def care about whether this happens or not.

You say its getting too much, yet in the very same sentence express the typical apathy of the Ontarian voter; if it doesn't affect me, who cares? This mentality, in principle, is what allows a nanny state to continue slapping wrists left, right, and centre as it sees fit.

Look.

It's not gonna happen if for no other reason than the reduced revenue from provincial liquor & beer taxes.

true...but there is far less public sympathy where smoking is involved.

for now..but the same was for smoking. Attitudes didnt change until the nannyers started the brainwash. Same thing as whats happening now with this earth hour BS. It doesnt take much to convince the population that something is "bad" and that "something must be done about it". Just ask a pitbull owner.

quote:
you can also make a much more direct correlation for businesses suffering should they drop the age to 19. smokers can smoke outside and still patronize a bar, club or restaurant...bar 19 and 20 yr olds from drinking and they have zero reason to be at that bar. given that most restaurants and clubs also pay their bills from liquor sales, it would destroy many businesses.

Regardless of your opinion as to what harms the hospitality more or less, you stated that this would not happen due to the opposition of the hospitality sector. And i gave a clear example from history as to why their opinion doesnt count in the nanny province of ontario.

quote:
I just don't see public support (or apathy, depending upon how you look at it) for this law in the way that there was for the smoking changes.

I wish we could go back 20 years and watch the debate about smoking laws. I remember hearing people say "they will never ban smoking completely from indoors. The government needs the tax money."

Apathy is nanny's best friend

quote:
I could care less, personally...but I'll happily support any effort to oppose this silly recommendation.

If you were 19 i think youd feel differently.

Thats why canadians get walked all over at every step. People here are too selfish to look out for others and then wonder why the rights that affect them are being stomped on. It's all connected whether you are a smoker, a pit bull owner or a drinker. Or even just a clubber who just goes out to hear the music. If you dont watch out for the rights of others, others wont watch out for your rights.

feel differently about what? I said that *personally* it's not an issue for me, but that I oppose amending the status quo.

there is a big difference between restricting behaviour and eliminating it...so this is NOT the same as the smoking bylaw debate.

you're not saying 19 and 20 years olds can't drink in certain places, at certain times, whatever...they're saying "don't let them drink or buy booze" and that's simply NOT going to garner the same public support that saying "smokers can't smoke indoors in public places" did.

we'll see how it plays out. I'm confident that this issue isn't going anywhere...but if I personally had a vested interest in the status quo remaining the same, I'd take steps to make my feelings loudly known and would be recruited support.

Jayx1,

Stop fancying yourself a political pundit. I almost wish Canada was under a Communist Regime so they would put an end to your bitching.

dont worry we are headed there im sure

I honestly doubt this would happen purely based on projections of lost revenue. Every single time I am in the liquor store I am outnumbered by 19/20 year olds 5-1.
