I support the ones I like by going out to their shows/etc. I won't go out to see an artist "simply because they are Canadian and I want to show my support" - I also need to like them too.
However, even for artists that I don't like, but make it "big" on the international stage - I do feel a sense of pride to know that Canada has some good talent that's making an impact on the rest of the scene/world somehow.

Oh and that Bryan Adams guy has done pretty well for himself too.
When the debate moves from the music itself to where the producer/artist is originally from, that is no longer relevant IMO.

As for supporting Canadian music: I think people who stand by them regardless of their content are morons. My brother was obsessed Sum 41 because he went to school with a few of them and the drummer grew up across the street from us. I always found that annoying because he never even listened to punk music before and wouldn't listen to any other.
If they aren't your thing then they aren't your thing.
Case and point: Nickelback
I like to bust a move to Maneater on the regular... does that count as support?
