Swanky!

Posted by jonnystel on Apr-09-2008 03:27:

nice!!! i think all of them should have some sort of theme pertaining to maybe the history of that certain area.! would be cool and a lot cheaper then totally renovating the stations to look like the sheppard line ones

and my god. of course everyone complains.. ... go to school people if you dont like it become politicians.. you obviously know a lot more about it then they do!

Posted by LKD on Apr-09-2008 03:32:

k really...why is my(and everyone elses) tax money going to "beautify" a station that BARELY ANYONE fuckin uses?....ive exited on museum only once in the 8 years ive been here....fuckin pointless bullshit

anyways, there's a good article in the Star about it here:

http://www.thestar.com/article/410686

That's the thing. The sponsors would not have fronted the rest of the bill had it gone straight to the TTC, as they know it would have been 'wasted'.

The truth is, it may not be the most accessible, or busy station, but at least it is a step in the right direction. Toronto needs more art, more things or attractions in the city, to bring us together. Walking around you get a very disjointed feel from this city.

Toronto needs its citizens to feel proud about where they live, and making the city more 'beautiful' will help get the ball rolling.

First of all, an announcement: Barb is quickly becoming one of my favourite people here.

As for the station, I like it. I'll accept the cost of doing it. Frankly, it's nice to see the TTC abandon the practice of slapping band-aids on everything. A total refit, especially at a station that while less used, certainly has a connection to the experience of the ROM and all the culture that goes with it. It's something to talk about, to keep interest in transit.

Besides, it'll take a lot more than $2M to fix the ails of the TTC.

IMO, well done. Let's hope nobody spoils it.

Oh, and aussieGQ...WTF, dude?

It's not about you. It's not about Torontonians in general. It's about dressing it up for the tourists and such that go to the ROM as an attraction. As soon as you get off the train, you begin your experience.

Although I agree with Orko (he's a smart dude) that beautification goes a long way to civic pride.

Posted by FunkyCrew on Apr-09-2008 14:01:

speaking of fixing, they really need to oil those wheels! every time the train makes slight turns (St. Clair station) or full-on turns (Spadina-St. George and Union) the squealing is unbearable

It isn't done yet. There's going to be an entire new platform.

That big hole out front, in front of the clock. You know, the one surrounded by dirt, construction equipment and signs that say "Danger - Construction Area".

I can see how it's confusing.

Also, the screeching of the wheels has nothing to do with the bearings. It's because the train cars roll in the turn, shifting more weight to the outside wheel. The wheels are just like a train, steel on steel rails - designed for straight track and long use. Some systems use rubber wheels to get around this.

Posted by Ravist on Apr-09-2008 14:48:

I wish the TTC would put money into things that are MORE IMPORTANT, there's probably things that need fixing but oh well museum is a must first. When TTC complains for more money im going to look back at this renovation at museum station.

Posted by StereoPrincess on Apr-09-2008 14:49:

i highly doubt it's the ttc paying for it.

and i love it!

Its usually not the wheels that are squealing, or at least not the massive bearings the wheels are mounted on. Typically the noise comes from the friction of the wheel wall rubbing against the track wall, which, typically amplified in turns. Not really possible to lubricate that.

As for the station, it looks ok. I think the money would have been better spent on cleaning up the rest of the stations.

thanks Captain Obvious, my point was that there is NO construction site at Union, not on a platform, not upstairs
the only thing that's new there are advert. posters that they stick on the walls every week

Posted by smuncky on Apr-09-2008 15:19:

union is getting a 3rd platform to deal with crowding issues. you're not seeing it because it's behind the wall. i'll try to find a render later in the day.

Posted by m2j on Apr-09-2008 15:19:

I think it looks ridiculously tacky... such a waste of money.
