rooftop crowd is fucking awful and I'll never, ever go back up there for anyone.

very good restaurant though.

I'm just saying...it's a nice, posh restaurant (very cool design), but the people on the roof seem to have a "look at me, I'm special. I'm @ Ultra!" attitude, lol.

im pretty sure he will be performing inside. there is more control with sound that way. the roof is nice for just hanging out though.

Ultra is an awesome venue and the food is pretty good

this is probably one of the only places in Toronto where I wouldn't mind seeing Armin.....maybe if the weather is right and the stars are aligned I will make it out.

As much as I throw shit at Armin, the man knows how to read a crowd.

Put him in KH with all the ASOT fanclub members, and you get 3 hours of uber cheese.

You put him in a smaller venue with more educated EDM crowd, I'll bet he'll play more like pre 2004 Armin.

I hope so, been dying for that for a long time, hence why I listen to ASOT 173 every now and then.

Well I actually think big DJ's that play smaller venues draw a lot of the Top 40 mainstream crowd. I saw Deep Dish at Ultra on a Wed and Oakenfold was at some lounge in Vancouver (forget the name) on a weekday as well and lots of people there were just dropping by after work in their suits and people that would typically stay away from Guv showed up. I personally think there is less energy at these smaller venues. People just sit around with their drinks or hang out by the bar. But Armin is Armin!!!

Actually Armin prepares his set beforehand, he knows what he wants to play and when, not saying there is no 'improvisation' in the set, but it's pretty much pre-planned.

Hmm iuno about that, I read in a recent interview that he usually picks the first couple tracks to play then go on from there...

It's given that a lot of DJs have an idea what tracks they want to play in a set

But Armin is too good technically to not know how to play for the crowd.

I really don't think he got to where he is now because he doesn't know how to read the crowd. A lot of DJs know how to play the popular tunes, but not many DJs know exactly when to play certain tunes like Armin does.

PS: Man, it really bugs me to say good things about Armin

hmmmmm...I'm more inclined to agree with 8Wonders. I'm pretty sure Armin pre-programs a lot of the elements in his set.

Pro: you get more complex, interesting mixes, effects, etc. and DJ interaction (since they don't have to have their head buried in the decks).

Cons: you don't have a DJ working the decks hard, you lose some spontaneity, etc.


personally, I more respect the skills involved with working the decks live...but then again, as a club patron, I care about hearing good music, not just witnessing technical wizardry
