i like armin's live sets but let's not pretend that he's a great producer nor shall we pretend his stuff is even close to being as good as the stuff nic chagall put out last year or markus schulz or a host of others. with that said i still kick back and relax with albums/sets from 1999 - 2001...not sure if i can say those were the best times for trance but i do know that's when i started listening to the music and it was so fresh and new. now, i'm a total trance whore and listen to new sets all the damn time and it's harder to impress me and it's harder for me to hear anything truly refreshing innovative and new. anyhow this year doesn't seem so damn special.

nothing special

that isn't trance. It's pop-dance watered down to appeal to the mass markets of ginos, chavs, neds, kids and deaf people

Only Trancey Track i've enjoyed in ages, plain bangin' evil.

Edit: Dammit Nikolai, i'm starting to sound like a trance.nu fanboy of your latest productions

Psy is still going strong.

Rest is sort of the reason why people who like electronic music are justified in putting trance fans alongside single celled organisms

even full-on has got to a really stupid point in places where they're trying to make the songs stupid, rather than a clever usage of things like triplets, breakdowns and mini-breaks there is some good but again, as much bad.

Posted by Lilith on Apr-21-2008 09:40:

Yeah but on average my 'hit' rate for good Psy is about out of ten tracks you'll get at least 2-3 which are worthy and the rest are kind of just filler.
Mainstream trance... 1 in 30-40 which isn't just rehashed, reheated and regurgitated tripe?

Posted by Ian on Apr-21-2008 09:43:

1 in 50 now, however there are some really good labels putting out quality stuff all the time

Posted by !LL on Apr-21-2008 10:38:

I miss Chicane times. Tiesto's Nyana and live @ Dutch Dimension and ISOS. I miss discovering Perry and Ozgur times.
I miss Electronic Elements and the feeling I had listening Coldharbour Sessions for the first time.
I miss Jan Johnston and Justine Suissa. I miss Beachball, Ferry's Sublime and Armin's 76.
I miss the time when trance was something you supposed to FEEL instead of some noise to get drunk on in clubs :\

I'm a late bloomer, just got into trance in 2005/2006 when I heard Nothing but You by PvD. Nowdays, compared to that and about 7 other songs past that song's release, it's all misshapen and not what trance is meant to make you feel like. PvD's terrible now compared to Nothing but You. Trance is meant to have feeling, not something that you can play in a background. I noticed a bit of a flame when I got the Armin Only 2006 DVD, but apart from that, not much is doing trance good. We need a kick-ass DJ, and we need one NOW!

And how can one DJ save the whole genre?
The production is shitty, generic and watered down, no DJ can change that no matter how good he is.

If I ever play trance, I almost always use pre-2006 tunes. It's very hard to find quality stuff these days. With that said, I moved from trance to prog house and prog breaks.

Sadly, prog-house 2008 = trance. Half the stuff on most of the big trance shows is labeled as "prog-house" on Beatport or the other sites...

Posted by Saka on Apr-21-2008 22:23:

if im honest I dislike 2004-onwards so instead of looking for new ttracks I look for songs I haven't heard from the period of early 2000's and late 90's

w00t!

I'm sick of looking for good dance albums in shops and seeing eric prydz and cascada on ministry of sound other labels that helped used to do good trance justice.

le sigh at modern poop.

It only takes one person to change the world. Martin Luther King, Elvis, all those dudes. look what they did to the world!

I'd be pretty confident that if Elvis changed music forever, so can a DJ.

I think trance sucked ass cuz it was all psy-trance. Then I heard some good trance that sounded more like Enya to a beat around 1996. That all sounded good until someone made Gourysmella and all HELL broke loose and hoover trance massacred my ears from 1998 to 2003, when it finally died out and trance started to sounding good again. I think trance sounds great now. =)
