-- Could anybody replace Pete Tong?

| Originally posted by Orko Maybe 'humble' was the wrong word. What I was getting at, is he has come from the bottom of the club industry, and has seen many different sides to the business and music. The experience he gained building sound systems was directly related this his current craft as a DJ and club owner. DD's experience selling shoes don't really have much effect on their music careers. Don't know if you saw Carl last year at the Guv, but definitely not washed up. The guy had a monster set, and people are constantly looking to hear him again. By that argument, Tong hasn't been a great DJ for years (or ever), but he knows music and how to distribute it. |

lol. wasn't there a thread about how old pete tong was. what was the answer? i really think he will be doing that for another 25 years. no successors are on the horizon.
digweed could do a guest hosting once in a while if tongy gets sick.
oh wait, they work for different radio stations. nevermind.

I'm talking about a RADIO DJ who could have (1) the personality, (2) the LARGE breadth + scope of music that Tong has and (3) has a great voice. And regardless Carl Cox is just as fucking old as Tong is. Why the hell are you arguing with me over this, you discounted him yourself in the opening post? |
it's gotta be someone with a true appreciation for all styles/forms of music with the knowledge to back it up.. Annie Mac's a good suggestion

im happy the thread has made it this far w/ out trailing off ha ha
id give tong another 5 years of service with a bunch of sick days here and there, after that they should just clone him ha ha
tong was even more boring than lawler so I for one am glad to see him go...
I wish he would take picotto with him...
And if Cox keeps going the way he's going....goodbye to him too...
I guess the old guys just get tired and slow down their music...
he will be replaced annually by the #1 dj in the world, kinda like pageant duties, only they won't wear tiaras or hold a sceptre...
essential mix will thereafter be called The Dance Factory - in association with BBC, DJ Mag and Pioneer
in reality pete will play until he dies like the legend john peel (RIP) did to 65. unlike john peel he won't be recognised for bringing a higher level of public consciousness to underground musical styles but instead for cashing a ridiculous paycheque for a 2 minute voiceover at the beginning of the EM and bigging up a few tracks he likes on rotation for a month on his own show.
and finally...
Mary Anne Hobbs FTW

Whats the name of the guy from Oakenfolds 99 set (forgot which one) that said "we are live on radio 1 essential mix..... nice one brotha, i said NICE ONE!" i think he has a wicked voice for the radio...

Tongy is legend... to this day I look forward to listening to the Essential Selection and Essential Mix each weekend and even more so lately, his In New Music We Trust from Thursdays...
And based on the In New Music We Trust tip he is leaning on as of late, and the eclectic selection being tossed in and getting more and more time than a year or two go dedicated to it...
Annie Mac would be the logical choice for the replacement, great voice (sexy british accent....mhhmmm) and as someone before mentioned, probably the most well versed and knowledgable and most importantly open to new and relevant music of today and what is coming. She seems to be definently the kind of person who would be ready and willing to embrace with no problems any direction or twist or natural progression EDM will take over the next 5, 10, 25 years... Annie Mac's show has quickly become one of my favorite and looked forward to show of the bbc radio1 weekend line ups over the past years...
On that note, I do think Tongy will still be a staple for weekends on BBC for at least 10 more years...
PS - I <3 Annie Mac...
I don't think anyone can replace Pete Tong, as what he's done over the past 20 years for Dance Music are simply a pair of shoes FAR to big to fill.
Though, I think a natural choice (from a Radio 1 perspective) would indeed be Annie Mac, given her knowledge and enthusiasm for all electronic music subgenres (both old and new).

Ok obviously he's allowed to have his own opinion! But is it necessary to retort on every single comment I make with "Ya well Carl Cox did this..."? (especially after the fact that he discounted Cox himself in like the second line of his first post)
He was arguing with me just for the sake arguing, it's annoying. lol People tend to this with me a lot, mostly because I bite the bait on stupidity 90% of the time.
