hmm.. I had once one of these dreams and it was SO cool gotta be my best dream ever.

But I never remember my dreams, this one was a big exception, training is welcome but... can't it be dangerous? doesn't have long term consequences?

the answer is simple, yet cannot be explained. basically, whenever a person dreams, its brain acts as if the person was awake. the body, however, is in some sort of parallisis (sp??). that is actually the reason why when we suddenly wake up we cant really move very well. not being able to move your body is simply b/c you dont really want to sleep and move your hands and feet (your brain thinks you do tho)
research has showed that even tho a person can have a very vivid dream, that person's body is well rested. why? they dont really know

I think that the body is well rested is because the muscles are not being used. Think about the body as a highway where nerve impulses constantly fire and return to a resting potential after a nerve impulse has fired. If your neurons do not fire (muscles do not move) then your neurons are in a resting potential and can go through active transport where nutrients will replenish the nerves. During the day, you constantly move muscles and fire impulses, do eventually your nerves will get tired and you go to bed.

i see your point, but when you just lie down without sleeping, your body doesnt get as much rest. it has something to do with being asleep. (if only i had payed more attention in psych).
logically, one might think that good rest is due to the fact that your brain is resting as well, but its not, its fully operational, as well as your nervous system

yea, but they are all good consequences.. nothing is bad about lucid dreaming unless you think really good stuff is bad.

Posted by apri_peel on May-16-2002 06:33:

depending on what you consider bad
lucid dreaming can be quite addictive to some ppl
there are ppl out there who are somewhat insecure in real life and being able to lucid dream gives them opportunity to be a superman in their own world
addiction is not always a terrible thing but it can have some unpleasant consequences
in other cases, ppl may have difficult time distinguishing real life from a dream b/c lucid dreams are very vivid and they feel real

im not trying to scare anyone but just be careful when you try it out

Posted by vito on May-16-2002 18:14:

Talking

bad consequences would be nightmares that feel like reality and that your actually there. depending on your mind that could be freaky scary

thanks for the info on rest during sleep and REM-sleep being non-restorative

Posted by SmellsExcellent on May-17-2002 03:34:

the other night I kinda had one.. i woke up around 2:00 and peed and then told myself I wanted to be on a beach.. i wake up on a beach and j-lo was swimming out there.. i sat around for a while and was just chillen and it was pretty cool to wake up (for real) and remember that I made it happen. Unfortunately I wasn't in control or totally lucid, but its a start.

cheers,
Marc

but the thing about lucidity is that you know that youre dreaming and you can change the nightmare to you killing the monster or facing your worst fear or whatever is scaring you, its not just vivid dreaming, but "consciously" dreaming.

lol...yeah...don't give away the ending to anyone who hasn't read it yet. Thanks for the compliments on my writing skills. Writing is something I love doing....oh and for everyone who wants the lucid dreaming guide...I'm terribly sorry. I don't have it at the moment. If anybody has Lotus Word Pro 97 on their computer though, I could send the file through there. But since I do not have it on my computer i can't. So if someone could help me out with that I will give everyone a guide on how to lucid dream so we can all blast through U4EA!!!!

i finally found the time to write this up....enjoy...and trust me it worx...so far i;ve had 12 >victims"
several girls have been made nude, guys been embarassed in several ways and various ppl have been entertained.

ok....the person has to be relaxed and you have to be relaxed. it's best done by a friend or a person of trusted value.
have the "victim" lie down on a bed or couch or grass or something of that sort, he/she should close their eyes and tell him/her to relax, and take at least 5 to 10 deep breaths. note: do this in an environment with minimal loudness or distractions.
Then start to gently rub each index finger with middle finger on each of the victim's temples (rub the temples untill the end of the entire session). (btw: you can have a pillow under the head, you'll figure wether or not its necessary).
tell them to breath relaxed and start to slowly and calmly count down from 99 to 0, or 0 to 99, which ever is easier for them.
during this process tell them not to concentrate.
Next.. the victim should start to mix up or jumble numbers, tell them to make sure you can hear them , but the order of the counting doesn't matter...it means they're slipping under into "subconscious".
let them breath calmly for another 10 seconds and then tell them that they will count to 5 and at 5 they will be in dreamy state and all things they do in this state will be acted out at best while they're lying down (ex: if they must walk to something, they should simulate walking onthe bed while lying down). after that, ask them if they can "see" anything [in the dream state]. If they say yes: continue beyond the NO step.. If they say no: tell them that they will count from 5 to 0 and when they hit 0 they will be awake and relaxed and rejuvenated or whatever junk.
so they said yes....
ask them what they see. if they see blackness tell them to look around in the "environment"..if the blackness has nothing in it...wake them up with the "No" reply method above. if they see things... like trees, or people... from there on you can pretty much tell them what to do in the environment.
note at this point... don't agitate them with extreme situations...thats only for sessions that have been longer than 30 minutes or so. you can ask them deep secrets, but if they refuse to answer let it go, besides some secrets are secret for a reason.
You must be calm and direct and mostly precise in your dictations otherwise the victim will become confused. if you want things to simply appear...you must make it credible.... example:if you want them to find a person, tell them that "the person is hidden behind the tree over there", and they should walk over and see them there.

Try not to have sessions last longer than an hour and a half, the temples get red and your fingers get tired and it's just not good..s ome ppl report headaches as side effex.
So finally...to wake them up...tell them that they will count from 5 to 0 and when they hit 0, they will be awake and either forget or remember everything that has hapenned in the "dream" and they will fell relaxed... at that point take your fingers off the temples and greet them from they're dream that you have created!.
tada! done!

When I was little I had nightmares everynight.. I was afraid of going to bed. Anyway, I learned how to overcome these nightmares by flying away.

Imagine that.. nightmares everyday

As I said, I've overcome it and now I haven't had a nightmare in probably 10 years or more. I'm not bullshitting you.. it's true

I DID IT!!!! yeah, heres what I wrote:

quote:

I was standing with a friend, talking about god knows what, and out of the blue I asked: "am I dreaming?" I must finally be working, all that repetition, classical conditioning shit.. if I ask myself that enough in the real world I begin to ask it in my dream world. IT WORKED! Anyways, he looked at me and kinda winced and dissapeared. I though to myself, "why am I not waking up?" It was a strange yet exhilirating feeling to know that I knew I was asleep and dreaming. I looked out over EP (thats my town since you guys surely dont know what EP is) and knew exactly what had to be done. Effortlessy, I lifted off the ground just as planned. Seconds later I was hurling upwards toward the heavens and Eden Prairie transformed into a NYC, LA, or Hong Kong - lights, signs, music, and people were everywhere. I considered trying to fly right out of my body, but decided against it because this was my first real experience with lucidity. Upon reaching an ungodly heght I decided to experiment with a few other flying techniques. I swam, kicked, and tried a few other things but they weren't quite as fast as my "shoe jets." As I was going back to my fast-paced flying style a voice came out of nowhere: "dude, get up, i made some eggs and pancakes for you." I shrugged and replied, "come on Bueno, let me sleep, I'm having fun." I knew I hadn't said it for real but I knew I would be pulled from my dream world soon. As I looked straight down onto a seemingly endless "legoland" , the ground began to spin and it seemed as if I was stationary and everything was moving around me. All of my surroundings blended into one grey-brown color and I had to wake myself.

Such a short dream but it lasted for soooo long.

I'm not sure if this excellent dream was the result of pulling 5 or 6 tubes of bong smoke or just the fact that ive been trying to do this for a while now... anyways, it was a sweet weekend. Hope you all had as much fun as I did (in real life ).

cheers,
Marc

i can usually tell when im dreaming cause WIERD stuff happens..i cant remember what except for one incident...i was in the back of a schoolbus and i suddenly flew to one of the middle seats where there was this..being i guess you could call it..then it said something to me in some incomprehensibly demonlike voice i cant even begin to replicate and grabed me...and then i woke up...scared the living crap out out of me cause when i woke up it felt like someone was holding on to my arm which was above my head.....yeah but when i have more "mild" dreams i can usually tell im dreaming but i dont have control over anything in the dream....pretty much one i realize im dreaming it doesnt take long for me to wake up..i guess ill have to read that thing

Posted by apri_peel on May-21-2002 20:39:

heres a situation:
you've got a radio alarm clock (ie, the radio goes on instead of an annoying buzzer). you're dreaming. in your dream a radio goes off but not out of nowhere but it was supposed to happen, for example, you turned it on. and it all happend at the exact same moment your alarm went off. now you're starting to wake up but you're still dreaming and you're confused because you're not sure where the music is coming from.

has that ever happen to anyone? it happens to me ALL the time. its weird how your body knows exactly when your alarm is gonna go off.

i think ive had a lucid dream like once in my life
i didnt really try or ne thing
but i saw something and it made me think... wait a min this is a dream
i kinda wasted it tho
didnt do much except jump around (yeah u heard me i jumped around)
then i just kinda woke up

and apri_peel that hecka happens to me sometimes
more often i hear an alarm clock and dream about waking up instead of having the will power to acctually wake up

Posted by Slylee on May-22-2002 06:33:

i've been sleeping and the phone will ring and i wont fully wake up but i'll just say out loud "HELLO?" hahaha then it wakes me up it's so funny, i wake myself up saying "Hello" to the ringing phone i never answered..then i just lay in bed and laugh at myself

i had my first lucid dream this morning
i was dreaming and looked at my watch for some reason & it didn't have a second hand and i thought, oh yes
it was weird it was like i was dreaming about having a lucid dream
my mind was completely active, but for some reason i couldn't make a setting appear, it was just blackness. i tried to fly but it was like i was floating in darkness or something.
the best part was when i felt like i was floating a couple of feet above my body, so good.
when i couldn't make any settings appear i just gave up and thought ill do it next time when i read some more, then i went back into vivid dreaming

it was pretty good, and was completely unexpected, i look forward to controlling it more next time

congrats man. if you really want to train yourself to lucid dream keep a journal that you record your dreams in...this will benefit you well...helping remember your dreams is an important key to recognizing dream signs

Posted by Spad on May-23-2002 03:38:

I've been trying to lucid dream since I read through that site that was posted. I didn't really use any of the methods mentioned other than trying to keep lucid dreaming at the front of my mind whilst I tried to fall asleep.

It's 4:29am. This happened to me about 30 minutes ago. I've tried to be completly honest with what I was feeling and describe things as I saw them at the time, rather than how I remember them now.

I was on a roundabout, there was a bus stopped and a kid put his dog on. The bus then drove off before the kid got on. I tried to run around the roundabout the other way to stop the bus and suddenly I realised I was dreaming and I was back in my bed again. My ears were screaming, like the most powerful wind and it sounded like pain. I couldn't move. I've had sleep paralysis before but it's always been and gone quite fast, I've never realised til the next morning what happend. This time I was aware, I knew I was dreaming and I knew it was sleep paralysis but I couldn't control it. The following is what happened next as I remember it, I'm not 100% sure it happened in this order though. There was a cloud thing in the middle of the room, it moved like a flying carpet would and came straight for my head, then swooped around the room and did it again. Very aggressivly. There was a man standing still at the end of the bed, a bit to the left, but he looked like a column of smoke, but contained as though it was in a tall, thin glass tube.. I concentrated on moving my arm and managed to get out of bed. At this point I thought I'd broken the paralysis and that I was awake again. I moved into the centre of the room and there was something there, a pile of clothes or something, very tall (about as tall as me) and I picked up something (I think it was a pair of shorts) and dropped it, it fell sideways towards my head. I realised gravity was all fucked up and everything was being pulled towards my head instead of downwards. I sensed the cloud/towel thing in the room again and moved towards the door. As soon as I moved I was pulled towards the wall as though the room was at an angle and the wall was the new centre of gravity. I was pulling myself along the wall towards my bedroom door to try and get out, then I realised I was naked (I wasn't IRL, I had a pair of shorts on) so I couldn't leave my room. At this point I realised I was still dreaming and instantly was back in my bed again. I couldn't move and the cloud/towel was flying at me again. Once again I concentrated on moving my arm and this time I felt it move and I felt reality coming closer. Then I was awake for real. I'd been crying.

Anyway now I'm fucked up. I'm going to be totally honest, I think this may have a lot to do with drugs as I've been silly in the last 7 days and done a lot more than I usually would. I've had bad paranoia today which I think is due to some speed I took at the weekend.

When I first woke up I was petrified, and then I went calm and decided that it was a lucid dream and it was a nasty one, but if I tried again right that second I could have another one and try to control it. Afterall it's only a dream. But 5 minutes later my body was shivering, every time I got to the point of nearly falling asleep I heard whispering and woke up.

Anyway I just thought I would share this with everybody, you can draw your own conclusions. All I can say is this has made me

a) very weary about fucking with my dreams
b) very scared of falling asleep, I know I wont sleep again tonight.

That's it. I've been as honest as possible. Some of it probably sounds a bit fucked up and I probably look like a total wimp in other parts but there you go. I needed to get it all down before I forgot it.

edit: a couple more things.

I want to make sure I convey properly how completly mortifying it all was as it comes across like I was just confused, but all the way through the dream there was this raw fear in me, I was terrified and panicing.

Somebody mentioned this may not be lucid dreaming as I wasn't controlling it. I dunno, the fact that I was aware I was dreaming and aware it was sleep paralysis, and the fact I conciously bought myself out of it at the end mean that by my interpretation of things it was. But maybe I'm wrong if my interpretation of what lucid dreaming is.
