-- Can you tell the difference between 128kbps and 320kbps?
Pages (2): « 1 [2]
Couldn't tell the difference - but I do have shitty speakers right now and this sort of music isn't exactly the sound my ears are used to.
I put in my senn hd's and had to listen a few times before I knew which one it was, and even then I couldn't tell by the voice. The instrumentals were the giveaway.
It was a tricky clip.
Couldn't tell the difference. I think it'd be easier to tell in dance music, as the hi-hats and such distort.

I got it right listening from my $50 headphones, but I had to listen a couple of times to be sure.

easy. should be more samples to show that i can do it everytime.
Too easy.
i got it wrong with my not so good speakers that aren't positioned optimally for listening at the computer. my gf was also doing some stuff that makes noise while i listened. gotta try with headphones later on and concentrate really well.
i would have thought i'd hear the difference easily. guess not then.
and i agree with people saying, that there should be a site with lots of samples of different music and it should give you statistics afterwards. would be cool to know how much of a difference different compressions actually make.
yup thats too easy, like asking if you can tell the difference between bluray and dvd
ok maybe not that big, but still easy
Telling different bitrates apart also heavily depends on the encoder used. For example, ancient Xing MP3 encoder or even L3Enc by Fhg sounds sh*tty at any given bitrate, while the latest LAME builds make it really difficult, especially with electronic music.
You would think with the size of todays hard drives and had fast the Internet has gotten we would see the last of 128 Kb/s MP3's....

i think that only listening for the first time you can tell about "hearing" the difference, later on when you know which sample is which it is more about convincing yourself that you actually hear it
indeed should have been a longer test, with atleast 3 options available. i did pick the right one, but i didn't think there was that big of a difference. in edm i think it matters even less since there are more synthetic sounds and not much natural real instruments.
anyone remember where was that test online, where they had few "experts" testing between 128kbps - 320kbps - wav, with high quality equipment. and none of them got it completely right, some even chose the 128kbps few times.
anyone with any hearing ability can tell a difference between 128 and 320. I would never play anything below 320 on a good system, or a shite one for that matter.
Would love to see more "questions" to test this out
I'll make some tests with more genres for you guys in a bit.

Most of them will be encoded from original CDs.
Nifty ![]()
Does ten samples sound good?
As many as you're willing to do, IMO.
How are you going to post the samples without us being able to see the bitrate? Use some sort of flash player or something?
edit: Nevermind, saw the other thread
