Doctor Berthold Kepplinger, who has examined the boys, said: "They communicate with each other but with a far-from-normal way. "Their mother taught them some reading and writing, although Elisabeth herself lost much of her childhood knowledge due to the years of abuse that began when she was 11 and her imprisonment from the age of 18. "There were no books in the dungeon. The main source of education, over the years, has been the television." The children�s only exposure to anything like real life was through storylines of daytime soap operas. Psychiatry professor Rotraud Perner, who has seen them, said: "It seems they may have created their own illusory world." Insp Etz told how Felix has been "full of joy and excitement" at seeing the outside for the first time. The officer said: "He made excited gurgling noises when he saw a cow. He slaps the air with his hand when he can�t control his excitement. "He squeaked when he saw the sun. He kept covering his face with his hand after realising looking at it directly was not possible." But the boy is scared of confined spaces � and clasps his mother while in lifts. Elisabeth, now 42, had seven children through being raped by her 73-year-old father in the dungeon below his house in Amstetten. He immediately "adopted" three � Lisa, 16, Monika, 14, and Alexander, 12 � and took them above ground. A twin of Alexander died at birth. And yesterday the furnace in which Fritzl burned the body to maintain his awful secret was revealed. The red solid-fuel burner is in the family cellar, just outside the security-coded trapdoor leading to the dungeon. The antiquated clunking contraption has a steel hatch and pipes linked to the house�s central heating system. The other child kept underground, 19-year-old Kerstin, was still in a coma last night with kidney failure. Fritzl remained in custody as more details emerged of the children he had with wife Rosemarie, 67. They had four daughters apart from Elisabeth � named Rosemarie, Ulrike, Gabriele and Doris � and two sons, Josef Jnr and Harald. >LINK< |

I don't agree. First, sick shit like this happens all of the time in every country of the world. The most recent thing shown is the girl who was locked in a dungeon since she "ran away" to another country. How do you really expect to stop this from happening? People can drop off the radar all the time, no matter what country they are in. The guy managed to hide it from his wife for years, in their home, so how were the police supposed to find them? Are you suggesting RFID tracking chips for everyone upon birth to stop this? Even if RFID happened, if they locked the children into the basement, how can you save them?
This is far from a Austrian problem. It's a fucked up sociopath problem and sadly, there are bound to be a bunch of them worldwide.

Only an idiot would generalize a disgusting crime to an entire culture. I see now that if you're Jewish, white, black, or pretty much anything other than Arab or Muslim, everyone gets up in arms about even the slightest stupidest things. So it's cool to tar Muslims, Arabs, and Islam all the time... eventhough the vast majority of you don't know jack shit about Middle Eastern, South Asian, or "Muslim" culture or the religion itself. You're rather quick to buy all the bullshit propaganda coming out of the media and the white house. Russians, Japanese, Native Americans, black people, Hispanics, just about everyone you can think of has been demonized (especially in times of War). I know that's off topic, but this thread is fucking stupid... and the abundance of responses here as opposed to the virtual silence when it comes to ragheads is well... a little hard to not notice if you belong to a particular ethinic group. And no, I'm not just ranting here. I bet most of you don't put up with dirty looks or racial slurs on sometimes even a daily basis... or, in most probability, a bunch of morons trying to get a rise out of you with racial / ethnic slurs... and even when you ignore it, well, they still feel the necessity to pick a fight with you... not a single person, but the way cowards always do, in groups. EDIT: But to be fair, I'm guessing those of you who're more vocal about this stuff probably were in the past, and simply don't have the energy to engage in such a futile activity anymore.
Don't even get me started on some of the shit that happens in the Middle East. It may not be a father locking up his daughter for 24 years, but in Saudi Arabia there have was a father a couple of years earlier who killed his daughter since he suspected she wasnt a virign and wasnt married....the autopsy revealed that she in fact a virgin.

Don't get my wrong my father was a migrant worker, and had to always start school late after the harvest. His first language was Spanish, and he was told he would never make anything out of himself. Still he put himself through school while married with children, and became one of the most prominent Hispanic lawyers in the state. He even founded the Texas Mexican American Bar Association, so it really isn't the same as being held captive.

I dont understand what kind of sick gang is this Austrian Police is.. all they seems to be inetersted in is proving that this guy acted alone and noone else knew about it.
"Colonel Polzer" as he likes to be called is too interested in shooing the media away from the campsite.. he emphasises that the investigation would continue for months again and again.. so that media guys looses interest in this and stop asking questions (which btw Austrians never did). All further questioning of Mr Fritzl has been delayed until next week for no reason. Many basic elements of the investigation have not even been started. Rosemarie, his wife, has yet to be questioned. Police asked her whether she knew what was going on, she said 'no' and that is it.. they found her denial credible. Police give bullshit emotional crappy statements like 'a mother cant let this happen to her daughter!!' and shit like that..
Conduct and handling of the case is miserable. Who tipped off the police if not an accomplice???!! Police says �Knowing about a crime is not the same as being an accomplice,� Oh IS IT??? Tipper is fucking rapist. �The rapist asked anonymity and we will respect that.� The police seem determined to rule out any possibility of someone being in league.
The door to the dungeon - which had received building permission as a nuclear fallout shelter - weighed 300kg (660lb) and could only have been hinged into position with the help of someone else. Mr Fritzl, went on several holidays, including at least one three-week stay in Thailand, leaving Elisabeth and her children in the cellar. Even if the small pantry was full of cans it is unlikely that there would have been enough food to feed them. And there are still questions about how the imprisoned relatives disposed of their rubbish. Police blocked questions on the issue and seemed even to deny knowledge of Mr Fritzl's holidays and absences. They say �If there is a home video from this Thailand trip then we would like the media to give it to us and we will then think about it.� The video, shown widely on television for past one week and they have not seen it and pretend to know nothing about it, yet again Austrians love to not care, to not know, to not ask, to not bother at all.
And I dont understand what kindda sick people live in Austria.. six sick individuals listed below:
One, Sabine Kirschbichler, lived for two years in the house and told the magazine that she frequently saw Mr Fritzl carrying heavy bags of shopping into the cellar after dark..
Two, Mr Fritzl's sister-in-law has revealed that the engineer often spent the whole night in the dungeon under the house. She said that he made daily visits to his cellar on the pretext that he had work to do and would tell other family members, not to disturb him. I mean common dont disturb him for freaking 24 YEARS??!! Ok you visit once a month.. dont disturb than.. than its okay.. but when you freaking visit the place DAILY FOR TWENTY FOUR YEARS and asks not to be disturbed dosent it get a tiny suspicious????!!!!
Three, Alfred Dubanovsky a lodger at the Austrian house says he saw another man go to the cellar where the abuse happened. He told the BBC the man was introduced as a plumber to him by fritz. Who was this plumber who visited the place when she was in? This Mr Dubanovsky assumed the basement was being used as a storeroom because a neighbour said to him Mr Fritzl often took food down to the cellar, which is four, the neighbour.
Five, he began to expand the underground dungeon from initially one room to three when she became pregnant, yet again NOONE noticed ANYTHING! Only in AUSTRIA!!
Six, fire inspectors routinely checked a heating boiler in the cellar in 1999. Nothing noticed!

�Elisabeth ran away from that house as a girl, police searched for her, brought her back and delivered her back into the violent embrace of her father,� says Hedwig Woelfl, the director of a child protection centre in Austria. �Running away from home was a clear sign of unhappiness ... but nobody apparently showed any interest in the fate of this girl.� The chief executive of the region, Hans Heinz Lenze, showed reporters documents proving that his council's go-ahead for the adoption of three of Ms Fritzl's children was legal: no trace of a sex crime could be found. Social welfare teams visited the house 21 times, but never looked around. Yet the building had in the space of a decade registered one missing person and made the claim that three babies had been dumped on the doorstep. Yes one MISING for 24 years and yet babies popped up at doors and noone asked anything? Oh Asmetten!! What kindda place are you?

The real reason was that Mr Fritzl would use his master key to slip into the tenants� flats to pilfer provisions for Elisabeth and their three children. That was on the days when he did not have time for a shopping expedition. �I took care of them all,� Mr Frizl told police in his first (and only) interrogation. �I meant well.� The rest of the family probably sees things differently. This man stole the childhood of at least three of his children � one of whom is still fighting for her life in hospital � lied to and manipulated the others, and raped and humilated his own daughter for a quarter of a century. The sheer relief of the reunited Fritzl family, sheltered in a clinic, tells its own story: they have all been living in fear, and that fear is now subsiding. Mr Fritzl�s dark, hidden life seems to have been � in his mind alone � steered by a twisted love for his daughter Elisabeth, whom he called Liesel. He started to abuse her when she was 11, in 1977. She was a pale, proud red-haired girl, the only child not to bow to her father�s snarling, changing moods. Her elder siblings kept their heads down, vowed to get married and leave the house as quickly as possible. Their mother, Rosemarie, seemed not to notice that there was something odd in the tense, bickering relationship. The following year Mr Fritzl successfully sought building permission to extend his cellar and make a bunker that could resist nuclear fallout. Was there already a plan to imprison his daughter? Elisabeth started to run away from home � once to Vienna, as the lodger suggests � and was beaten when she returned. At 16 she left home to work as a waitress and live in a hostel. Either because he was afraid of her betraying the sex secret, or because he couldn�t stand to lose her, Mr Fritzl decided that she should disappear. The calculating part of the Fritzl mind came again into play: he waited until she was 18 before drugging and handcuffing her. At this age she became just another adult missing person. The abduction seems then to have been about control � breaking the will of a daughter who defied him. Mr Fritzl had reportedly raped before but sexual possession appears to have been only part of the equation. Part of him became engrossed in the mechanics of deception. Most of his ruses would not have worked in other societies but were enough to fool the Austrian bureaucracy. He persuaded the community that Elisabeth had joined a Satanic sect and that over a decade she had dumped three children on his doorstep. Now Josef Fritzl is sharing a small prison cell with a man accused of attempted murder. Oh an Joseph Fritzl was a well-known and feared whore house regular in Linz, too. Apparently rejected for his perverted requests such as wanting the prostitutes to "play dead" etc. How much sickness does fit into one human, really?
