Did the more 'intimate venue' actually translate into a more intimate set?

It would be interesting to see the tracklist differences between large and small shows. The cynical part of me thinks the tracklisting would be the same because he is out promoting his album.

PS - holy crap so many of you sound so elitist. You have absolutely no idea how many of those people were actually drawn in by z103, or how many came because of their own musical preference. The z103 bashing is getting pretty old.

Agreed! The transition track (right before La Guitarra) was:

Simon & Shaker vs. Groove Carcia - SOULTECH! (Simon & Shaker Remix)

This was tune of the night for me. Simon & Shaker are fantastic. I've liked their tracks for so long.

they have especially been dropping monster tracks lately though imo, and their sound is great that it can be played in a tech, trance or house set suitably - perfect for the aforementioned crossover...

King SUPERFUN!

I arrived about 9:30 and was glad that there was no lineup to get in. Mark Oliver was playing a very chill set while people were finishing up dinners and having warm-up cocktails. Good to see Mark as I haven't seen him in ages.

Whomever opened for AvB was incredible. This guy was fantastic - his track selection, progression and build to AvB's start was perfect (IMO). I would gladly go to see this guy play again. Kudos to him.

AvB started around 11:40 and was still playing when I left around 1:50. Overall I was pretty happy with the set. It was well laid out and kept me interested the entire time. There was a minor lul about 12:30 - but it felt intensional to let off some of the build from the opening of his set before he moved onto the second half. Great tracks off his new album - nice to hear everybody singing along.

I thought the crowd was pretty good - mind you I stayed in the back most of the night and had a pretty sheltered spot to dance. A good turnout of friends made this night even more enjoyable.

All and all for a Tuesday evening this was superfun!

Thumbs down New Armin Move

Freddie Mercury

AvB

Armin van Buuren was doing this new move thing with the headphones last night - he probably did it 10 times throughout the set.

I'm not sure what the idea is here exactly. It looks a little "Freddie Mercury-esque" and for me, a long time AvB fan, it seems a little disingenuous (and atypical of Armin).

Put your arm down Armin. I get it that it is on your album cover - but just because you're #1 DJ in the World you don't need a special move.

Hanging by a thin thread...

This party was pretty calm until around 1:00ish - when I don't know what happened or what was put into people's drinks.

Armin picked up the pace a little and entered into more lengthy portion of beat-driven tunes (sans the breakdowns, etc).

Around the same time I noticed that Ultra started to get really crazy/weird, really quick. For a while it felt like the place was hanging by a thread (barely)...

- A quick trip to the washroom - only to turn around when I find that the back room is a sea of people, rammed shoulder to shoulder, with some girl trying to be lifted over the crowd (crowd surf?) to get to the coat-check area.

- "Track-Suit Travis" doing some strange front-crawl/spin swimming-style dance move, vodka bottle in hand, trying to pick up girls by filling their glasses but actually spilling vodka everywhere with each swim stroke.

- A sea of people busting into the kitchen from the previously mentioned small room in the back (near the washrooms) and then a fight breaking out in the kitchen with bouncers rushing into the kitchen (lol!) to break it up and get the crowd of people out of the cooking area.

- "Bottle-Service Brady" in his embroidered sportcoat, piss-loaded and fumbling around to get ice into his glass then totally missing the glass with the vodka and pouring vodka all down the side his buddy's pants.

For me it seemed like Ultra went from normal to antics in 30 seconds flat. Good times.
