brilliant mix! I love to hear different stuff, very nicely done!

I liked it, always had a thing for the Humate mix of Glockenspiel. Never read the book so I can't really say how it matches up or anything.

Thanks to all three of you for having a listen and I'm glad everyone's enjoying it.

It's from Light & Shade, although I pitched it down quite severely here so it was at half-tempo to the WOW track, and overlaid some ocean harbour sounds to tie it in with the book. Finding an intro track was the toughest thing- I wanted something that was pleasant, ambient, had the sound of the ocean and only used traditional/conventional instruments all to evoke the opening of the novel. I wanted the serenity of the Thames estuary at the height of colonial power, which would juxtapose with the unsettling and dislocated sound of Intensify.

Well yeah, but that's an album as opposed to a mix. Literary concept albums aren't new- Rick Wakeman did Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Jeff Wayne famously did The War of the Worlds, both in the 70s.

And the trouble with Songs of Distant Earth is that Oldfield could only think of one melody for the whole album. It's a very nice melody, but I got bored of it long before the end.

I think each page of Heart of Darkness took me the whole length of this mix to read--densest.book.ever.

Awesome concept, too!

as you could probably make out from that link i was a fan of the urban soundtracks hehe

i always thought it was a wonderful idea to tell a story through music and although i don't really think oakie did that great a job at it (too much promotion of his style if you ask me), i'm interested to check out your interpretation...

i used to have all the urban soundtracks...i wonder if they are still laying around on disc somewhere...

Read the book, so this looks neat. Grabbing now

EDIT: So I listened through, it's a really transporting mix...Love that tribal feel you've got going.

It also loops into itself rather well.

You should try reading James Joyce. Finnegan's Wake is nearly impossible to understand without simultaneously reading a guide to it.

And thanks to everyone for listening and commenting. This one has gone down far better than I was expecting- I'm thoroughly chuffed that people are enjoying it.

damn this mix is like hard cock. its loaded and ready to excite!

YehYeah, System J!! Nice mix. I've been listening to this one while working. I just finished another one myself, called Incandescent Glow, so check that one out when you have a go.

Cheers bro!

It's been such a while that I've read HoD or watched Apocalypse Now that I really wasn't paying attention to whether the music was in sync with the storyline. And really, it doesn't matter. I was instead just wrapped up in a pretty fine tribal workout of dance beats. This would go over incredibly well in some forest parties.

Success! I found it. And I can't believe I never commented - I thoroughly enjoyed this mix, and the concept is fantastic. I may have had different interpretations of mood of the novel in a few places, but overall I really thought this was an ambitious and totally win concept.
