-- Can you BELIEVE we elected this guy?

I didn't elect him, but yes I can very easily believe that many other people did. These are the same people who believe they are qualified to evaluate candidates on the basis of proposed economic policies, yet they can't even keep their own finances in order. How do they presume to think that they have the foggiest idea what constitutes sound economic policy? Well, it is because one of the characteristic ironies of stupidity is that the fool is too foolish to realize that he is a fool. But this is really how the typical person operates in every aspect of their lives, so it does not surprise me at all that they have elected and later re-elected such an individual. It does not surprise me because that is precisely the system we have chosen: democracy -- government by fools.

When he left office, Johnson had a 50% approval rating. Nothing grandiose, but that's what he had coming to him for pushing through the most controversial piece of legislation in American history (the Civil Rights Act).

Nixon, after resignation, had a 24%. Before resigning it had been a full 25 points higher (49%). I should remind you that Nixon's numbers dropped because he did something obviously illegal.

Bush's numbers? Well, in February the American Research Group clocked him at a whopping 19% (all-time low). So yeah, sometimes I wish I lived in those days as well.

i wasn't meaning to compare them...i was referencing the decade, and all the shit that went on in the 60s.

i understand where you're coming from....but, really, how would you feel if that's what you saw? and then the next clip was of how many people died overseas that same day? wouldn't that infuriate you more?

Again, you've completely missed the point. Nobody gives two shits about him playing golf. What we're pissed about is what he said -

I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf, he said. I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal.

Solidarity? The ole Commander in Chief doesn't play golf anymore so that he feels better about sending our boys off to die for no good reason? Yeah, I'm sure those mothers feel a whole lot better knowing he's made sacrifices as well.

i know it sounds stupid. ok, i know it is stupid that he feels that way....but wouldn't you be upset if you were someone's parent, who's kid was just shipped out, and you turn on the TV and you see him giving some speech about "war this, war that...now...watch me sink this shot" and the camera pans away and he bogies on the 8th hole.

come to think of it, didn't someone parody something like that before? or was it a parody? i can't even remember anymore, so much stupid shit has gone on in the past decade. seriously the 2000s have been kinda f'd up.

Him giving up his hobby, or them shooting him doing his hobby, has no effect on the war, the outcome of the war, or if some 18yr old or some 50yr old goes to war.

no, of course it doesn't. but it has an effect on the human persona, doesn't it?

to me, if i was some kid's parent, and i saw him giving this speech, i'd think, "man, what an idiot" and move on.

if i saw him in the scenario i described above, i'd be a little more pissed off, i think.

It's really a shame Cheney decided not to run!

Wouldn't have mattered how much Obama and Hillary go after each other

Posted by Lilith on May-14-2008 00:14:

I can
Everyone gets suckered at least once in their life, that happens.
Doing it twice though? Kind of embarrassing!

Posted by smakmagik on May-14-2008 00:14:

USA must be so ashamed of this man. We have terrible politicians too, but someone so stupid with so much power is just sad.

Posted by Alex on May-14-2008 00:16:

Bush may not be THE SMARTEST OF ALL the presidents, but I doubt he's ACTUALLY as stupid as everyone makes him out to be.

He makes an ass of himself in public, believe it or not not all politicians are great in front of the camera or huge audiences. He isn't charismatic at all, and he fumbles with words because he's nervous all the time but that doesn't make him stupid.

Cheney makes an ass of himself every time he gets anywhere NEAR a camera or a microphone, and we know he isn't stupid, just evil.

Posted by Yan on May-14-2008 00:19:

Voted for him and proud of it. If Gore got or Kerry (ugh) got into office, no good. Just chose the lesser of two evils both times, methinks.

also, clovish, i'm not trying to say he's hot shit or the best thing since sliced bread, i'm just saying that everyone that has been in that office has fucked up, one way or another. and who ever is in their for the next election is going to fuck up as well. obviously, giving up golf doesn't really solve any problems, but don't you think he would get even more bad press/PR/etc... if he was shown live on TV waving his hand during the 9th hole with that normal stupid look on his face? (all the while, troops are being shipped overseas)?

I don't really know how to respond to this without getting angry. Not to say I dislike you Will, because I think you're a great guy, but these are not simple gaffes or "fuckups". They are amazingly flawed positions and policy views, outright lies, and largely completely illogical and incongruent with reality. The fact that you fail to see the difference between "fuckups" committed by almost every president in history and such grave judgment errors and outrageous statements is troubling.

I'm not one to jump on the fuck bush bandwagon just cause it's in vogue like most people have/are doing. When I lived in France I actually was pushing in the other direction. But over the past 7 years I have really come to understand a little bit of how this guy works, and it scares the SHIT out of me.

I don't think he's an idiot at all. I think he's adept at putting on an act, at playing the part, and at lying so consistently that its hard to tell when he is and when he isn't. I doubt he even thinks he is lying, much like Dana Perino thinks she's always telling the truth by staying true to whatever the whitehouse message is. The list of "gaffes" here is ASTRONOMICAL. It defies belief. You think it's not possible for anyone to be any more misleading and then they go and top themselves. You look at what the man says and then you look at what is happening/has happened in REALITY and the disconnect is fucking AMAZING.

I couldn't disagree more. I don't care if he gives anything up, as if my son/daughter/friend is over there, I want them home! This war was pointless, and unnecessary for the most part. Him making real sacrifices and getting our troops home would be a much better way to spend his time than to give up golf and go horseback riding on his ranch or bowling in the white house.

Are you still banging on with this pointless drivel? Care to make an actual contribution, or do you just love the useless pedantry?

i'm kind of glad to hear that.

international perspectives are always nice to hear.

but PR is PR, and i still stick by that i would rather see him making redonkulous statements about his hobbies and stuff, than some statement about "all is right in the world"...which he has said enough before.

meh

He shouldn't be doing either though. Don't make a statement if you have nothing to say (this is in reference to bush and the way he does this shit). He just loves to hear himself talk and never really has much that is coherent to say. His speeches are written for him for fucks sake, and he still makes up words, talks out his ass, and continues to run this country into the ground.

As Clovis wasn't a bandwagon guy, I am neither. I really hesitated to even start hating on bush until quite recently. I would say personally, the past 2-3 years for myself have been where my view has changed. I tried to see the good in things, but it just keeps getting worse and worse every time he speaks.

I can't say I feel any pangs of genuine disbelief due to reading those. Maybe 7 years ago, but this sort of shit is old hat by now.

I really doubt much he says would garner any sort of reaction from me anymore.
