Where the problem comes in is playing them out at clubs with less than perfect sound. Sometimes they'll work fine even if they're mastered poorly, but every once in a while you'll throw something in that's in the highest quality possible, and it still just sounds like arse when it's cranked up over a huge system. In that sense, I may deem a track "unplayable" from the point of view of a DJ, but I'll never deem something "unlistenable" or somehow less worthwhile solely for being/sounding old.

Exactly.

On that same token, playing something in a set that sounds dated alongside of newer tracks with that "modern polish" can make the negative aspects of that old track stand out. This can work for or against you... it could be a desired effect.

that's pretty much where my train of thought comes from.. i find it hard not to listen to trance from a dj's point of view nowadays. if the old tunes are in context though, such as in a classics set, i can tolerate them

I agree with Mr. Mystery, if the track sounds good it sounds good.

I think DJs and clubbers get too caught up in keeping current, and that's where questions like these come from. A super old school sounding tune can really spice a live set up and change the mood, so I'm all for it if it's a good tune all around.

OLD MUSIC..............

When i listen to a track i'm looking for good NRG or beautiful melody. i dont care if it sound old/new it is all based on the feeling that i get from the track.

For example, DuMonde - Never Look Back, this tune is in my TOP 10 from 2003 and i dont care that it sounds old and it have much more NRG in it then lots of "new" tracks
