Do you really want people being able to associate your TA name with your real name?

You can always fix your privacy settings, and employers are not that anal and won't hunt you down this way! I doubt that having other TAs on your facebook will damage your perspective career.

"hmmm.. why does this interviewee have a friend named 'sketchbag'?"

a/ There are way to see parts of your profile regardless of privacy settings, if you know what you're doing.

b/ Adding people from the internet who you might not know very well means they (probably) have access to all of your photos and can get direct links to them to show people not on your friend list.

c/ It's more the issue of now all of your TA posts are associated with your actual name. Do you really want a potential employer to read all of your posts on this board? Some of you post the most ridiculous details - about where you work, how hard you partied last weekend, etc.

You're a little too paranoid I think.

For a/, no employer is going to try to circumvent facebook security measures for every single potential applicant. I doubt anyone's going to even bother searching for you on Facebook. Generally, HR have more important things to do. Even calling the references you provide is starting to become rare.

c/ as well. It's so much effort to search your name, find what forums you belong to (for example, the facebook links in this thread hide your name from the google bot), and then wade through your posting history for hours on end trying to find out what you did last weekend. No one's going to bother.

It's in my profile. I've added the people in this thread who I consider myself to be friends with, and I make it a point not to add randoms, so I rarely advertise my profile on public places.
