First check that you cables actually do work.

I think you need to look at the M-audio mixer to check you actually have level coming in to the soundcard.

Then make sure the correct inputs/driver (i.e. 1 and 2 from the Maudio) are selected in audacity.

If you have level coming in to the soundcard, then you know audacity is being weird, so time to reinstall.

Try disabling the on board sound in you BIOS (audacity could be receiving a signal from that and as you haven't got anything plugged in to it, it would give a flat waveform.)

Hi, What if i want to record without a laptop at a live gig? anything i can plug to the mixer to record? will the sound suck? thanks alot.

i use a minidisc player to record my livesets

I didn't even know that they still made MD players.
Do you rerecord it onto your computer then?

yup, i just dub it over to computer when i get home

i still have 3 of them sitting around, used them in college all the time when taking radio broadcasting, i like it because the minidiscs themselves don't degrade in sound quality when you erase and record over time

it's a shame the technology didn't take off because sony were stingy with it

yup, that's what i loved about MD, because of the plastic disc the data is on inside and the way the laser writes and erases, it allows for infinite records and erases with no loss in sound quality

as long as you record to it with proper levels, it'll come out as if it was a digital recording

But it IS a digital recording

Hey if you have one it's a good use for it. Otherwise flash based recorders are the shizzle.
