Meh on the veggie meats.
They can be ok, but get stale and some are just gross.

Better to make your own nutburgers or raw burgers.
It's not that difficult if you have any ability to cook.

The dope wings or nuggets are made by Qaurin or somthn like that.
Forget the spelling of the name. Almost all commercial grocery stores have them in the veggie section.

Or Whole food has an even better selection for that kind of stuff.

Hope that helps.

obviously I cook some stuff. Been making black bean burgers that ROCK... been making spinach lasagnas.... some other stuff too.

But after working sometimes I get home late and putting a Veggie Burger on the george foreman rocks

Though maybe I should experiment with soy???? Or even tofu. I haven't done that yet. Gotta look for recipes on those!

chinese people make THE BEST veggie meats...go here and check it out for yourself, the stuff they think to make is crazy..
http://www.vegieworld.com/

Quorn brand uses some weird fungus based protein...it has made me sick before after eating it and i know more than a few other people that shit themselves uncontrollably after consuming the fake chicken cutlet things. i'd be careful with that one.

Fungus?!?!

Thanks for the heads up, thought that brand tasted best as far as commercial veggie wings go. Don't think ill be eating that brand anymore knowing peeps got sick...

Going to whole food brings up way better options for that kind of stuff.

anything you do with chicken can be done with tofu...there are different "firmness" levels of tofu, which is what makes or breaks a recipie and people's experiences with tofu. in general if you want to use tofu in say a stir-fry, burrito, grill, bake, etc use the firm or extra firm and marinate how you would chicken. if you freeze tofu for a day or two, then thaw it out and cut into slices it works really well in stew and soups and has a really weird texture that soaks up sauces really well.
don't get "silken" tofu unless you want to blend it smooth.
i'd avoid buying any pre-marinated or spiced tofus...they're a total waste of money. whole foods sells fresh tofu by the pound for 99cents. a pound lasts me 2 or 3 meals. try using crumbled tofu in lasagna to add protein instead of cheese. its really good if you use the right tomato sauce.
i should get a veggie cooking show...

Vegetarians are only vegetarians because they've never been to a proper churrascuria.

The short answer is yes.

It's a good start that you have the good sense to imagine that if the ingredient list reads like a treatise on chemistry, then there might be something amiss. But the best recommendation I can give you is avoid all "health foods" like the plague. Unfortunately, almost all "vegetarian" foods fall into this category, since vegetarians tend to be the kind of people who buy this garbage hook, line, and sinker. They're basically the dietary equivalent of alternative medicine, which is to say that they are up there with religion on the bullshit-o-meter.

I'm sure there's the rare item out there in the health food category that is genuinely healthy without being exactly the same thing at a higher price, but such things are rare and it's NOT worth the effort to try to find them.

Arbiter... always a HUGE fan of your posts.

I just want to know your thoughts on Soy and other meat alternatives. Still stray??

agree wholeheartedly.

for all the ranting about spoiled meats, antibiotics, et al there are just as many people accepting processed veggies as some organic/health food holy grail.

unless you made it/grew it/cooked it, there is a good chance it isnt good for you. if you had to order it off a chinese web site, also likely not good for you.

its also a statement on our society when food goes from a stubborn necessity to something that people can endlessly pick and choose to the point of absurdity. normal veggies are cheap, forzen veggie meals arent...which is the better option?|

ugh u sound just like my boyfriend lmfao!

Thomas is that you?????????? Atleast the latter part with real veggies sounds like him

What about Proteins?? Sure you can get them from veggies but I'm not the biggest veggie fan - at all!!!! Sometimes we work late Bizzy.. [now its 6:15] It takes an hour to go home and of course on days when I leave late things like subways trains are delayed or something has to happen and going home and wanting to eat a lil meal that cooks up in 10 mins on the Foreman grill isn't a big bad deal.

This isn't for eating breakfast lunch and dinnerrr. Just a bit healthier then what I normally used to eat.

Frozen meals aren't the best of things but morningstar vs hot pocket is a huge difefrence lol.

edit - going home and looking forward to seeing more replies to this thread after 9pm-ish.

Well the truth is that there has been a lot of scientific research done on diets containing a lot of soy in lieu of meats and despite how much work has been done the result has been yet more questions rather than answers. Personally, I am skeptical of both those who say that soy is healthier than the typical consumer meat product, and I am also skeptical of those who say that soy is going to give you cancer, make it so you can reproduce, turn you gay, et cetera...

The problem I have with soy products and other meat alternatives is that they are usually heavily processed and have a list of ingredients that is often of epic proportions. Both of those are warning signs.

If I were going to use a meat alternative, I would probably use soy products because I know for a fact that they are a good source of all the amino acids you are missing when you skip out on meat. But I admit that if I were going to go that route, I would definitely do more research before choosing among those options, although I suspect that I would mostly find more frustratingly contradictory evidence, as exists with the supposed benefits/harms of soy.

In the absence of more conclusive scientific research, my opinion is that the healthiest thing to do is to try to consume foods that are as close to how they exist in nature as possible. And while the meat you buy at the market is definitely not 100% like it would be in nature (this is true even if it says "organic," though in those cases it might be closer), it's definitely closer to what exists in nature than meat alternatives. So that's why I tend to stick with regular old meat -- or at least that's how I rationalize it. I admit that I also am a person who just really enjoys meat and can barely stomach the alternatives, so it might affect my beliefs to some degree even though I try to be as objective as possible. I think biznology's post is great too.

Aaahh! Nothing like a fresh fruit salad in the morning for breakfast!

Posted by gehzumteufel on Jun-03-2008 23:21:

Mel, save yourself some headache, and get a food saver. Also start to plan out your meals that you would ordinarily cook. Create the portions that you would cook, but leave it raw. Put it in those food saver bags, and then freeze it. All that needs to be done usually, is a short cooking session of about 15-20mins. Your freezer will be full of things to just cook in small, perfect sized portions.

Also, that big list of ingredients you saw. It said that thing about very little salt, and then you see all the variants of salt, which are still salt, in the list. As previously said, just avoid it if it has all that shit in it.

And in an effort to just eat healthier, pretty much just cut out soda, fast food, energy drinks, coffee, and anything high in sugar if you haven't already done so. That is what I did, and it really helped boost my energy level a lot. And helped regulate my weight better, even though I am still quite thin (155 @ 6ft). Oh and eat lots of fruits, change your meals to be 6 small meals, and drink lots of water.
