Once again another mau5 thread gets owned.

Just do a tutorial and get it over with!

is it used on mixing or mastering stage?

from creeping the producer forum for quite some time now, i've learned that when people say things like MAOR ANALOG AND MAOR SIDECHAIN

they are just fucking with you, you don't need to go out and drop a few grand on a quality synth because if you don't know what you're doing with it, it would be an expensive doormat, instead get familiar with some vsti's and learn them in and out, through this you can learn synth basics and will start to learn how to make nicer and nicer sounds, and if after learning your vsti's in and out you still feel like you need to go buy some overpriced equipment, then go grab a ball and play in the traffic because you haven't learned anything

his moog voyager certainly helps his productions. that and very good mixing.

actually they mean MAOR LEVI

Ow yeay... This interesting Cubase function could also be used when creating music (sorry guys, don't know if logic, ableton or reason (or FL) have this):

That... And a lot, I mean a lot, of analog!

Posted by richg101 on Jul-01-2008 10:25:

im gonna have to fork out for a cubase upgrade. mine dont have that function what settings do you have to use in order for the 50 cent/dr dre and charlotte church options to become clickable?

Dunno.... never needed to use it

You just need to use this mathmatical algorithm

its not the size of your boat but the motion in your ocean

if that fails,use

I aint got much but it can fill a pram

iwas trying to say 'its not what you have got but how you us it ' in a more humourous way

Please tell me your joking? I mean, reading their website looks like they have no idea at all

This type of device is often called a "limiter" or "compressor" by audio industry people.
???

Well now I understand, I'm sorry, I'm not that intelligent

They do but they are not coming from a music production angle. This unit isn't a limiter or compressor it's a automatic gain control unit (AGC), it seems a compressor should be called a DRC - dynamic range control (unit?).

It seems this unit soft clips peaks adding harmonics - seems similar to a vst I've been looking at called Event Horizon but not sure.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Jul-01-2008 16:49:

Compressors and limiters are automatic gain controls.

They use gain automation to change the dynamic range of a track.

Posted by flutlicht junky on Jul-01-2008 18:18:

But isn't gain purely changing the amplitude of signal not the dynamics. A compressor affects the gain only if it exceeds the threshold set by the user?

I seems this tool just raises and lowers the volume to try to give a steady level but adds some soft clipping when levels get too high? So it looks like this is similar to gentle overdive.

If you change the amplitude of a signal by different amounts at different points in a track, you change the dynamics.

That's what a compressor does. How much it changes the dynamics will depend on what compression settings you're using.

Yes. That's the point of using a compressor: to make the dynamic range smaller by lowering the volume only when the signal goes above the threshold.

lol cheers.

In relation to this tool hey class it as a automatic gain control (AGC) unit and reading around it seems that there is also a class of processor called a dynamic range control (DRC) which also has a compressive affect to audio.

So what is this doing when it processes? overdrive, softclipping limiter, valve/fett/optical compressor emulation or all? Just curious

It sounds like it might be trying to emulate the sound of analog compressors and other analog gear, which can sometimes produce a pleasant kind of distortion if turned up to high volumes. From the way people have been describing, it sounds basically like a compressor that colors the sound a bit.

Posted by costizzle on Jul-07-2008 07:04:

i dont think you need expensive gear to make great quality sounding music...the majority of producers dont have the greatest set ups yet still make it work.

so dont lose hope =)

It's a compressor and a distortion unit in one, hence why they called it a distressor. Yes, it's great at emulating various analog compressors
