One thing to think about Ben, if you want to keep weight down, is to ride singlespeed. You take off the weight of the shifters, extra chainrings, cogs, derailleurs front & back. Can really amount to quite a weight savings. Sometimes it takes a while to find the gear ratio that fits your riding but, when you do, it is FUN. Just hop on your bike and go and not worry about what gear to be in. My mountain bike is a singlespeed and I can ride just about anywhere. Sometimes it's a little spinny on flats but again, you can change the gearing to suit your riding style.

Also for anyone interested in mountain biking, here is a great forum with a ton of info:

Ahh good info. Thanks!

Also, years ago when I was much younger, there was a guy that had a bmx-style bike but it had a longer frame and massive like 20" wheels. Any of you guys know what this would be called? I know the brand of this bike was a GT. Beyond that I have no clue what it is, but the damn thing rode nice and smooth and was easy to ride.

I don't want to create another thread, but can anyone recommend a good cross bike for ~$400?

I want something that will be quick in town, but not wretched if I'm riding some of the unpaved (but compacted) trails around here.

Norco?

I got a used 2005 VPS ALine (retail: 2k+) for around 1100. It is fucking awesome. Hayes HFX-9, marzocchi 888VF. It is like riding on cloud 9 and going dh with it it rips and pretty much takes on everything. I've done some big ass fucking drops with it (5 feet+) and I feel nothing.

In short Norco makes good bikes, look at some of them.
