So far E3 has been epic fail this year.

Sony has likely had the best conference of the big three, but I haven't been impressed thus far.

Somebody give me a quick rundown on what's going on, I haven't been keeping up to date.

So far, from what I hear on this forum as well as others...

Nintendo - absolute shit.
Microsoft - boring, nothing exciting.
Sony - not as shit as Nintendo, but too much flash/CG, so no real take
on what REALLY will happen (pretty much just like every other E3
ever).

Wow, E3 really has gone to shit if this really is the case.

Best aspect of E3 so far...

http://www.destructoid.com/e3-08-fa...95691.phtml#ext

quote:

Youve probably read a lot of Fallout 3 previews by now, but have you heard about blowing a female Raiders head off while in the basement of a burned-out elementary school? Or shooting an automated propaganda-bot voiced by Malcolm MacDowell?

Because I did those things.

I did those things.

The first Fallout is my favorite RPG of all time, and I was excited as hell to try out Fallout 3. Was I disappointed? This is usually where Id say hit the jump to find out, but by this point its pretty obvious that I wasnt.

Hit the jump to read a stream-of-consciousness recap of the half hour (which felt like five minutes) that I played.

I come in, watch a cute 50s-style propaganda ad for the game, sit down, and am told I cant talk about the characters backstory (which I didnt end up seeing anyway), the pictures on the loading screens (which I didnt pay attention to), and the 360 achievements (which I didnt care about).

I started inside Vault 101, right next to the exit. I was told if I went forward, Id run into Megaton. If I went left, Id end up in Springvale, where a fun elementary school was waiting for me.

Considering every Fallout 3 preview Ive ever read greatly details the ins and outs of Megaton (theres an undetonated bomb in the middle of the city, which you can set off in a side quest), I decided on Springvale.

Exiting the vault reminded me why, despite whatever complaints one might have with the way Bethesda handles Fallout, the epic first-person 3D RPG will always be better than 2D, isometric third person perspective. In the original Fallout, as youre leaving the vault, some text tells you something like, You see a bright light ahead of you. This is the first time in your life you have seen sunlight. Thats well and good, but its nothing like actually stepping out of the Vault into pure whiteness, so bright and overwhelming that I momentarily thought the game had crashed. The whiteness slowly faded away, however, and I realized that my character, the vault dweller, was adjusting his eyes to a sunlight hed never before been exposed to in his life.

It was awesome.

So, Springvale. I show up, and a floating Enclave propaganda robot (remember them, from Fallout 2? I guess theyre still around) was floating around, spewing out inspirational speeches from is that who I think it is? Malcolm MacDowell! This can only lead me to believe that hes probably the end boss or something (why would you ever include Malcolm MacDowell in a game and NOT make him the end boss). I left the bot alone, searching for the elementary school.

I got lost, and ended up in a small house. A young woman with white hair came out, asking if a nearby gangster from Megaton had sent me to collect her debt. I told her no, that I was just looking for my dad, that I didnt want any trouble, and that I would take her money to the gangster for her so she wouldnt have to risk it. She thanked me and gave me all her bottle caps.

Then I shot her to death.

What? Don't judge me.

I wanted to see if, as was the case in the original Fallout, you could kill any character at any time. And, if that poor woman was any indication, you can.

I found it, entered it, and was pleased (if frightened) to be immediately greeted with gunfire from a Raider on the second floor of the foyer. It was at this moment that I got to experience the hybridized FPS/turn based combat on display. Of course, I was too excited to actually activate the VATS system, so I just shot at him a lot in realtime first person, chased him around, and shot him some more until he died. Pretty standard, but fun and immersive.

Also, Ive got a Nuka Cola. Just throwing that out there. Im looking at it right now. If I drank soda Id down that crap in a second.

I get to the basement of the elementary school, and am ambushed by another Raider, this one female and wielding a knife. She rushes toward me and, looking down at the little card in front of me, find that the right bumper starts the VATS system. I activate it, and time freezes. You probably know how it works by now (time freezes and you use action points to target specific parts of your enemys body). When I heard about this, I assumed it would be an alternate way to play through the entire game: those looking for a modern experience could play it in realtime FPS style, I thought, while purists could just stick to the VATS system.

In reality, its far more likely that every Fallout 3 player will have to indulge in a bit of both. The VATS system is so useful, and so deadly (once you get within a reasonable distance of your enemy, headshots can have a 75% chance of connecting, with a pretty hefty chance to cripple their eyesight), that it almost becomes a powerup like bullet time, almost. I used all my action points to pump the Raiders face full of 9mm lead, and after a slow-mo animation showing my character fire multiple times at her, I watched in glee as my final bullet scored a critical hit and her head flew off.

I didnt say her head exploded. I didnt say there was a gory exit wound.

Her head.

Flew.

Off.

Like someone had whacked her in the neck with a katana.

My mouth was agape in horror, but also enjoyment.

I fought many more Raiders and eventually made my way to Megaton (stopping to blow up a propaganda bot on the way: they only take a few shots to destroy, and they have no defenses). I unfortunately spent so long roaming around the wastelands, trying in vain to find Megaton and fighting all manner of huge radioactive bees and rabid dogs and hockey mask-wearing raiders (his head DID explode, sending an eyeball in one direction and half his skull in another) that by the time I got to Megaton, I only had about five minutes left to play.

I entered Megaton, tried to find the mob bosss bar in order to kill him and avenge her death (it still counts as avenging her death even if Im the one who killed her), and found the front door locked (thus making it the least patron-friendly bar in history). Trying to pick the lock initiated a little lockpicking minigame, which I was in too much of a hurry to read the instructions to (it didnt look all that enthralling). I had the option to force the lock open at risk of breaking it. So I forced it. And it broke. And I couldnt get in.

With only two minutes left of playtime, I ran frantically around Megaton trying to find someone to kill in a hilarious way.

Thats when I ran into an adorable, elderly woman who was the wife of one of the town guards. After some very amiable conversation, we said our goodbyes and I shot her in the face with my hunting rifle.

She survived, unfortunately, and ran away as the rest of the town guards came to rip me limb from limb. Frequently giving myself stimpacks to heal myself (up on the d-pad), I chased after her, lusting for blood. I shot her in the leg, hoping to cripple her. The bullet found its home, but she kept going. I initiated VATS. Aimed for her head. Fired.

THE

OLD

LADYS

HEAD

EXPLODED.

I let myself get gangraped by the guards after that, because I knew there was no way my play session was going to get any better.

I know I didnt really experience the nonlinear RPG aspects of the game you know, the things that Fallout is really known for but I now sure as hell know that the combat mechanics are, if not identical to those in the original Fallout games, really goddamned fun.

HER FUCKING HEAD EXPLODED.

I can't fucking wait.

Oh don't get me wrong. I've been waiting for Fallout 3 since before the entire project was handed over to a new development team.

It's just that MadWorld is a totally new IP with film noir visuals and what looks to be fun gameplay, both to watch and play. I'm already expecting Fallout 3 to be amazing.

SEGA's the most goody-goody with their main competition from years back, it seems.

Is it just me or are are this press conferences getting to painful to watch? Im not talking about introducing new material, as all three were seriously lacking in that department, im talking more about how bad a presentation they actually put on. Let em explain.

I watched the Nintendo press conference first. I was expecting Reggie to come on stage from the start, grab our attention and dont let go for the length of the conference. Instead we get this woman with an annoying voice that talks about every everything like its the most exciting thing in the world. For the length of her presentation i cant decide if shes talking to us as we were 6 year old kids or if she is talking like a 6 year old kid herself. Just before i pop an aneurysm Reggie comes on. Now that is better. He talks about stupid sales crap but somehow when Reggie speaks, its interesting. He makes the sales figures sound much more interesting than anything that came before (though i will buy that snowboard game!). That is how i like to see a presentation done with personality. However even Reggie can only do so much if he has bad material, so lets just say that this year the only interesting thing about the Nintendo conference was Reggie himself.

Oh almost forgot the bog boss of nintendo and God were there as well. While not as interesting as Reggie or well versed in the english language, mr. Iwata is also interesting to listen. I guess good speakers cant be hindered by language barriers. As for the god of gaming, i have long since lost hope that the man will learn any english (seriously they start teaching them english at such a young age, how come so few of them speak it or even understand it), but no matter. no presenter could have made Wii music interesting even if the presenter was Angelina Jolie and she did a slow striptease throughout the presentation and at the end, did a naked concert alongside naked Uma Thurman, naked Emily Procter and naked Bai ling.

So then i hear that the Nintendo press conference was by far the worst this E3, and it may have well been if we only count content, but my god if we compare presentation it was a like a 2am Ibiza beach barbecue compared to a 5pm dinner party at an old peoples home. FFS watching the MS and Sony conferences were among the dullest three hours i have ever spent in front of my computer. Oh sure, some of the games they showed were great, as an avid RPG fan i loved hearing about Fallout 3 (though i must say that in the gameplay video at least, it strongly resembled Mass Effect. Not that there is anything wrong with that, i love Mass Effect) almost as much as I loved hearing about all the Square Enix projects. I will of course buy everything that Square Enix puts out, as everything looked fantastic.
But that was it. Nintendo managed to make at lest part of its conference interesting, even though they had nothing interesting to show, while the other two conferences were dull beyond belief despite showing some things of interest. Neither of their main presenters showed any personality or enthusiasm on stage (even though they mentioned that they are happy, proud or excited to present something every other minute or so) and it felt like all they put out was an endless stream of information without any real structure. I mean seriously, i put more energy into presenting a school paper than Sony and Microsoft did into presenting their lineup, because if i bored the professor as much as they bored me, he would fail me. it wouldn't matter if my paper was spot on, if i lacked the proper skills to properly present it, it would be considered a failure.

So that is what i would like to see in the future, put someone on stage that can pull off a presentation. If their top wigs cant do it, don't force them on stage, put someone from, oh i don't know, marketing on that, they should know something about making a good presentation. Just spare us the dullnes of the people that bored us this year.

never ever paid attention to press conferences. i only get excited about hands-on updates from games reviewers.

Weird how that happens, I remember growing up on NES and Genesis, and usually always fought my cousin about which was better, Genesis or SNES (since he always insisted his SNES was far superior) lol.

Yeah, you would think someone with a bit of passion for gaming, and that is a very good speaker/presenter could be paid to make those press conferences a bit more bearable. Hell, I have some experience and took a course on public speaking and presentation, and felt I could do much better than what they did.

I agree on all points. They need to take a page out of Apple's notebook or something, or in Nintendo's case, just let Reggie be Reggie. His first E3 a few years ago was great.

E3 was ROUGH this year to work at....I was up for 68 hours at one point. Between last thursday and wednesday night I had 12 hours sleep TOTAL!

Anyhow, I setup webcasts for all three of the major press conferences...here's how I saw them..

1. Microsoft: Microsoft's conference was w/o a doubt the most unorganized I've ever attended. And it was so un-energetic...most peeps were falling asleep.

Order of events at the MS briefing: Gears of War 2 & Fable 2 --> Let's show the world how much we are willing to blatantly take Nintendo's idea...down to the art style of our characters --> Final Fatnasy XIII ... capping off a press conference with a multi-platform game, even if it's FF13, and now announcing anything special for X360 with it...not a good way to leave a good impression!

2. Nintendo: It's obvious their direction has shifted majorly....focus is moving onto casual gamers. A real, real smart business decision as the casual gaming market...a market which gets little press is EXPLODING and the market range is IMMENSE. So much potential business wise...even if I'm not a fan of it....they are gonna capture the casual gamers market and the regular gaming market (party games have already proven successful with hardcore gamers)

3. Sony: Sony is doing it's own thing and focusing on its own properties. I think Nintendo is going continue to lead because of the direction it's going leaving them in one market, and the other market being a war with Sony vs. MS. MS is in the lead now, but Sony has the future titles. There's zero doubt about it. So many exclusives coming up...so many of them look amazing. X360 is already starting to see a lot of rehashed properties and unless they get some new IPs, Sony is gonna be storming after them in the next couple years.

Once those exclusives start coming out...and once Sony drops the price of the PS3 one more time, I think we are gonna see a HUGE shift...Sony is real real smart on when it's pulls the switch on business moves. I think they are waiting for the right time for that price drop to lay the smack down.

That all said, each system has its own advantages and disadvantages. X360 for things like Xbox Live (Marketplace) and other thing. PS3 for the extra entertainment in Blue Ray movies and the new movie/tv show services it has. Wii for it's interactivity and family focus....just saying that in terms of numbers, I think Nintendo will be on its own in one area while Sony is really gonna start hurting MS and overtake them at some point unless MS changes direction.

If you were at the press conference at E3, you will see how lost MS is...how worried they are. I think they are trying to do too much and it's just going to hurt them in the end.

The changes at executive levels at MS are becoming really appartent.....

Very cool to hear from a person who was actually there.

Nintendo's E3 was awful from my point of few. Maybe kids and casual gamers will dig Wii Music and all that party game shit, but me, I get tired of that within 20 minutes. I still haven't bought a Wii and probably won't, mainly because the system is infested with non-hardcore crap that wares off in value within 1 or 2 play sessions. Not my cup of tea. I know many who own Wii's and barely touch it, if only for the occasional Wii Sports session when friends are over. Thats the problem...the system is aimed TOO much at the "Everyone" crowd, and not at the 25 year old male who has some time time to blow on a Saturday afternoon. Who plays Wii Bowling by themselves?

Microsoft didn't have much new to say. Sure, the FFXIII announcement was big, but like you said, its a multi-platform title. They are getting something the PS3 is getting too. No bragging rights there. Fable 2 and Gears of War 2 are both sequels to games I didn't dig much in the first place, plus they were announced a while back, so I didn't go crazy over those. The NetFlix partnership is irrelevant if you ask me; movies were available on Live already, so this isn't some revolutionary new thing that'll change the 360.

Sony impressed me the most. They introduced new properties and new features on the PSN. Maybe some of those features are already passe on Live, still, they are NEW things that got people excited. I felt like Nintendo and MS didn't have much new to say, just a lot of reiteration and reannouncing of things we already knew about. None of the big three had a truly, all-out impressive E3 showing, but Sony had me the most excited, especially with both inFamous and MAG.
