What the fuck? Fail.
CounterStrike is clearly #1, followed by Quake.

Halo ranked higher than CS, Quake and UT?

I think that's considered to be a sequel to Goldeneye, which IS on the list, and since no sequels allowed, that explains it. |
Meh, I wouldn't go that far. Just because it was based off Goldeneye's engine and had some similar gameplay elements doesn't really justify it as a sequel.

I love you.
And yeah, light gun games are a dumb addition to this list. I suppose that "by definition", it fits... but anyone who's not a complete moron knows that they are separate genres.

Yeah what a joke. UT had revolutionary graphics and was one of the first games do to big team based games with lots of people.
The graphics, gameplay and stability of the engine were great at the time and still run beautifully, even on XP.
What a crock of shit - UT should be top ten for sure.

Truth. Besides the game having a very similar HUD (when you paused the game, the pause screen was nearly identical to Goldeneye, etc.), the storyline was nothing based on the Bond universe.

Missed this thread the first time but God damn, totally agree with spiral. Where the hell is OFP? One of the best shooters around and easily one of the best games ever made. A top25 shooter list without it....wow.

Yet another crappy list.
Halo is pretty good, I'd give it an 8/10. However there are a lot of 9/10 games that are ranked lower then it on either list.
Posted by chrisday on Nov-22-2008 13:32:
I would say the top 3 are spot on.
I can't believe that Deus Ex isn't on that list.
I also really enjoyed 13 on the playstation/xbox (the cartoony one) Although I think I will prob be in the minority on that one.
I also had lots of fun on Soldier of Fortune!

Re: Top 25 First-Person Shooters of All Time
halo fucking blows. i never understood how people can get so into it. crysis is fucking awful. farcry 1 was alright, 2 was just boring as shit after fully playing it. Medal of Honor deserves its place much higher, the first two PC versions (AA,SH) were golden masterpieces, online was outstanding. Battlefield 1 for PC had fucking AWFUL ballistics, sucked cock.

i'll admit i'm not good but then again i'm not good at counter-strike either and i find that game fun as hell. guess it's just preference, it just seems so over-rated to me. but at the same time, those who think halo is great might think counter-strike is shit and viceversa

This. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was a true masterpiece, and so unsung.

What about mods? Action Quake 2 is far and away better than anything on this list.
WTF is Halo doing that high up? It's a quality game, sure, but nothing spectacular or deserving of special merit, what did it do that hadn't been done 50 times before already?
Also, what's it based on? Single player campaign? Or Multiplayer? Two entirely different experiences to be had. I think single-player FPS campaigns are a waste of disk-space, personally.
Unfortunately, this is what happens when magazines start hiring people out of school, those idiots have spent so much time doing their homework, how the FUCK are they supposed to know what a good game is?

Agreed.
I've not played some of the FPS games on the list, so can't really offer any educated opinion, but UT should have been a little higher on that list. Halo shouldn't even be Top 10. Counter-Strike should be top 5, and Deus Ex was pretty good as well.
Serious Sam was shite.

I'm hearing a bunch of complaints, but if you made your own top 25 list you'd be shot down just as fast.

Well, to begin with, intelligent people wouldn't attempt to make a top TWENTY-FIVE list for a genre with 10 stand-out titles if it's lucky. An FPS is an FPS, very few stand out enough to actually be placed in any form of ranking after top 5, let alone 25.
Secondly, it's important that when making a top X list for a genre, that the games you list are actually members of said genre. Sorry, House of the Dead is NOT an FPS, it's a First-person rail-shooter.
Finally, it's also important to know whether they are comparing single-player campaign, or multi-player or the overall opinion of both combined. They are two entirely different worlds, so I would say you have to choose either-or.
In short, the entire premise of the list is flawed, and thus the list is flawed as a result.

Yeah, I think "top" lists are pretty pointless. You can have a favorite game, second favorite and such, but beyond that it stops making sense.

And they are never consistent. If somebody were to ask me to name my Top 5 games today, then asked again in a month, chances are the list would change.

Intelligent people wouldn't take a top 25 list so seriously. If you want to show me how a proper list is to be done, feel free.

Did you read the post? Or did you just hit reply and tell me to show you? I explained in perfect detail what I expect out of a Top-Games list.
I expect the list to be short, top 5 is golden. Top 10 if you MUST add in a few shovel-ware games that you really like. Any particular genre in gaming has 5 stand alone titles, and anything after that is pretty much guaranteed to be imitations, or the original concept of an improved imitation that makes the top 5.
Secondly, I expect a genre-specific list to include games within that genre, and not throw in games from other genres. House of the Dead is a first-person RAIL SHOOTER, not an FPS, it belongs in a comparison between games like Silent Scope, Jurassic Park, That game where two players are cops and the arcade machine has guns with recoil, etc. NOT in comparison with real FPS games like Goldeneye, Doom and Halo.
Third and lastly, I expect some explanation for how the list was compiled. As you well know, my beef with an FPS list is that you MUST distinguish the multi-player experience from the single player experience, and thus rank games separately based on those two unique experiences.
So as an example, for top FPS games. I might say:
Here are my top 5 Multiplayer FPS games of all time:
5: Goldeneye - Yadda yadda yadda, what a good game, I masturbated to this game in my dreams and stuck my dick between two copies of the cartridge so I could pretend it was a vagina one night.
4: Unreal Tournament - Like, whoah
It was the first game to have pretty graphix and lots of people!
3: Action Quake 2 - Real guns, realistic health, bandagin, limping, doors, arcade-style straffe jumping and high-speed. So super-fun! Personal fav!
2: Counter Strike - A little slow for my liking, but tactical requirements made this game super fun.
1: COD4 - A perfect blend of speed and realism, good maps, great guns, perks help noobs overcome the learning curve, fun game modes. What a game!
YAY I made a list that's ALREADY 100000000X better than that ridiculous top 25 peice of shit. And it took 5 minutes.
It's not that I take these lists too seriously, it's that I wonder why people bother with ridiculous lists that serve no purpose except to fill the pages in a magazine with useless, baseless, CRAP. If you're not going to do it right, don't BOTHER doing it!
