Looks awful. Essential mix is going downhill.

I know the essential mix is a promotion in its own right, but I would like to see djs do something innovative with the slot, instead of hashing out all your own productions.

If everybody did this essential mixes would be a yawn fest.

I completely agree with your statement. I just didn't know how to comment on this latest essential mix as politely as you have...

this is what the mau5 does best...hashes out his own productions...

the electro (in general) thats been coming out recently is same old same old....but he always sounded interesting and exciting.

+1 I totally agree with everyone you said here.

I'm really digging that 'Hi Friend' track. When is it being released?

FUCKING AWESOME on Deadmau5 for being able to put out many mixes with music soley created by the man himself!!! How many other Esstential Mixes have been put out with a tracklist created purly by the artist mixing the tracks? please name a few?...cause I can't.

The essential mix has became the pinical of who's who on the global dj ciruit....yet most of the mixes contain majority of music produced by arists other than the dj that created the mix...It's almost the same as me becoming famous for panting pictures that Picasso painted.

Good on deadmau5 for pulling up his socks and firing bullets!! Enjoy the artist for what he created, and even enjoy it more that it's released FOR FREE!

my half drunken rant/beef is now offically ended lol

to me a good dj is someone who has a distinct style that is unique to them. deadmau5 definitely has a unique production style, one that is now being copied by many. i like hearing his own productions but i would like to hear how his ideas mix in with ideas from other producers. combining multiple genres to come up with a totally new sound for example.

Posted by elFreak on Jul-21-2008 17:39:

the thing is deadmau5 does not dj.

You know what I love about electronic music and DJs? Being exposed to a wide range of music that I would have never heard before. I love digging through track listings and finding tracks / artists / labels that I never knew existed before and being blown away.

I love hearing tracks that I may have ignored otherwise, be played/mixed in such a way that it makes me stop and go 'wow' and get a new appreciation for the track.

I love being taken on a musical trip / journey, and I think limiting a DJ mix to 100% of your own productions is not doing the art form of crafting a captivating set justice.

When doing a DJ set of your own productions, you are limiting yourself to a very small catalog of tracks. But, when you dont - you're opening up an endless sea of sonic possibilities to tickle the ears, engage the brain and move the feet.

The exception to this would be LivePAs when they are done REALLY well. Examples of this for me would be artists like Sleeparchive, Seph, etc. I like Live PAs that seem to organically morph/evolve and not so much 'track 1 stops now, track 2 starts now' like a few PA's I've seen (Jake Fairley reminded me of this when I saw him at The Mod club a year or two back)

That being said, not a big fan of Deadmau5 - so not going to comment specifically on this mix, but just as a 'generally speaking' of what I like about DJ sets

meh...big deal. It's his mix, he did with it what he wanted.

typical TA hating to bash the guy instead of "holy shit, you got an EM slot, congrats!!!"

that he DID get an EM slot is proof enough that he doesn't need career advice from anyone here

Posted by NuERA on Jul-21-2008 23:55:

but you're all talking about, and you're all going to listen, so i guess we know who wins.

Posted by Knox on Jul-22-2008 00:16:

i won't listen

ditto all that...

Posted by kaniz on Jul-22-2008 00:36:

Who Let The Dogs out also topped the charts at one point. Just sayin' is all

Deadmau5 does get quite a bit of hate-on on TA which I find odd - his productions just dont do anything for me. Well produced, just not cup of tea. But yes, the fact he has an EM mix, headlines big festivals and all that is great - nice to see Canadian peeps getting some recognition, especially from when they are from around these parts.

Congrats Deadmau5 on getting an EM mix.

Deadmau5 is an excellent producer who is trying to be a DJ as well.

There aren't too many great producers who are also great DJs and vice versa. Majority are either one or the other.

His productions have impressed me throughout his newly-found career and I'm excited to see what his new tracks sound like.

He's still a promo-whore though.

Posted by gummybear on Jul-22-2008 00:39:

you can never have enough promo..therefore..being a whore of it can only be a good thing...

Posted by 8Wonders on Jul-22-2008 01:52:

The one obvious benefit of having an entire set of your own music on an Essential Mix is clearly ... publishing royalties!

If I were asked to do a guestmix, I'd obviously play as much of my own stuff as well

I enjoy all of those elements of a dj set aswell, but from an aristic standpoint, it's much harder to put together a full set thats quaility with your own music than going through a record bag and playing other peoples tunes.

My rant was directed at everyone who were complaining about the lack of "variety" in this essential mix.

I was saying it took more creativity than selecting a tracklist of someone elses music, because he had to take the time and create all those songs in the first place. And I respect that much more than any dj set that has "taken on a musical trip / journey," filled with other peoples tunes.

Right on, totally agree.

I loved this mix...
This falls into the category of "wanna get ppl who dont like electronic music to like it? then listen to this..."

Got 4-5 ppl LOVIN Deadmau5 in the last 3 days just from this mix

Posted by kaniz on Jul-22-2008 11:59:

Skimming through this mix now. There are elements of his production that I really like, but also elements of it that I find really annoying. Could see myself enjoying a few of his tracks in the club, but not for 2 hours on end.

Nice bit of chuggyness here and there, a few nice blippy bits. The electro-ish overtones just sound abrasive to my ears and make me go 'ack!' and flip forward quicker than I should. Vocals tend to annoy me, same with really floaty-hands-in-the air type moments.

Generally speaking, dislike it as it's 'not my thing', not jumpping on the TA-hateon of deadmau5 - props to the guy. "Objectively" speaking - its not bad. From a personal-taste point of view, it makes me cringe more than a few times.

Yeah, even if it wasn't this surely made it a mud slide.
