Entirely, this is the most amusing thing possible when you realise it.

A good way of reducing social anxiety is to remember that you're really not all that important or interesting to the vast majority of people. Unless you're really outrageous in some way, they just won't care all that much about what you do or even remember for very long.

I've traveled by myself to multiple out-of-state locations and have never had any problems being by myself at all. Never received any odd looks (save for the guy who hit on me at a pizza joint in San Francisco) and have never really felt out of place. I don't know what your problem is, man.

Additionally I'm from a small town where you will meet these people again. But in a city I could shit myself and rub it against a wall with my name. But all these people who saw I'd never see again. Why worry?

Posted by winston on Jul-28-2008 00:14:

yeah, i love being by myself. but, i also enjoy the company of others every now and then (or more often than i would like to admit).
On the other hand, some people have a hard time spending time by themselves for intrinsic reasons (that we may not know of)

Anyways, if you're in Mexico you shouldn't have a hard time getting along (if you know the language) but all circumstances differ and I wouldn't be able to give any solid advice.

just be yourself i guess, as corny as it may sound

Precisely. It's why I do half of the stuff that I do when I'm out. I don't know these people, I'll never see them again, so I don't fucking care.

that's not a very nice thing to say. it just shows how you truly feel about the environment you're in. i dunno man, how are people going to like you if you irradiate such negativity.

take it with a grain of salt

Also, i can relate to this because i've been through similar situations in the past. Take my advice, if you wish. A book! Reading makes you focus in one specific task; Focus intensely, then go somewhere else and try to absorb every experience you're in.

Posted by Dervish on Jul-28-2008 00:23:

why not shit yourself and write in a dirty protest:

"fucking beaners let me eat in peace"

Posted by Lira on Jul-28-2008 00:24:

I don't mind it that much. I often read or use the computer while I eat alone.

These people are plastic, cheap, don't have any brains at all and obsessed with things that you're not hungry about. That makes you different from them. Ignore them.

LOL @ beaners

I can't help it, it's a local thing! You know 2girls1cup is Brazilian, right?

Posted by Dervish on Jul-28-2008 00:31:

Why no, I did not. Where can you get cheap flights?

If you wait long enough on the landing strip at the airport, you can reach for the tyre compartment and wait until the plane takes off to Brazil.

It's quite cheap, and it's really cool

Casualties are suicidal. It's not your fault.

Definitely agree here
It's so obvious when people eat alone and are embarassed by it. I see it all the time on my lunch break - they keep taking shameful bites of their food with their head constantly jutting upwards to see if anyone is looking at them. Most people ashamed of eating alone take it one step further and pretend to be complete engrossed in some random article in a magazine or fuck around with their cell phones while picking at their plate.

Total BS in my opinion - and it also ruins the enjoyment of your meal. I LOVE getting away from my work during my break and eating alone in the food court - even my own lunch which I bring with myself probably 80% of the time.

There is nothing to be embarassed about - just sit down and enjoy your freaking food. You're human and you have to eat - who is going to stare at you weirdly for indulging in a basic human need?
