I just hang up or simply don't pick up when I see it's a 800 or 866 number.

The problem with that is, on occasion, the phone calls are totally legitimate.

I work for a business that is sometimes forced to make outbound calls to customers in order to advise them of last minute problems (like a plane flew into the airport - your flight is canceled). There have been instances where the people will not pick up with the same idea you have, and then later call us because "we never called to tell them".

I have even had people pick up and immediately say "I am not interested", when I was calling them to let them know they were eligible for a refund or something else.

There have been occasions where I became hasty and didn't really listen to what they were wanting to talk to me about, and meanwhile, I actually wanted it *bank calling to give me a credit card, or up my interest rate on my savings account*.

Best plan IMO is to feign interest until the caller has proven to you that you truly aren't interested, at which point you pull shit on them... lol.

That's why the answering machine was invented.

Security prevents a lot of places from leaving messages detailing travel plans.

We are not allowed to leave names, locations, airlines, reference numbers, or phone numbers over the answering machine unless we have explicitly been asked to.

Why?

Because a lot of numb nuts put fake phone numbers into their account when asked at the time of creation. A lot of morons are traveling without the knowledge of other people (we had a huge issue with that once... wife found out about her husbands trip with his girlfriend) and on occasion, the travel plans themselves are a surprise.

We will attempt to call 3 times, and then we e-mail you. If you don't get any of it, you're SOL.
