Awesome.

Also, RE: The artwork. I got a PM asking about it - it's a combination of the following two pieces from Ralph Steadman:

I've wanted to do my own kind of Steadman based HST homage for quite some time, just finally got the inspiration to do it today.

Yay! Need new music for the Airplane!

No deadmau5? sign me up for 5 of these babies. I'm really feeling the art work!

Do you ever have a set amount of tracks that you WANT to put in? Or you just try to keep it under a certain time limit?

To be honest, it's really neither one, and beyond that, I really don't have a set way I approach promo sets like this.

I guess the simplest way I can explain my "process" is that I prioritize cohesive flow above all else. Usually there are a handful of tracks I'd really like to fit in, but they don't always work out.

I generally try to start by building a project specific "crate" (for lack of a better term) or library where I go through the music I've been playing a lot the past month or two and find the stuff that is going to feel most relevant to the overall flow I want to achieve.

Then I go through old stuff to try and dig up things I may not have had a chance to play with yet - add that, and then start programming the set, which I usually at the very least initially work out in some sequencing program to get a very general idea of the flow of tunes independent of mixing, and finally decide on a tracklist or two, take notes on phrasing, pitch, etc., mix/record, and proceed to repeat with minor changes in mixing or tracklist until I'm happy with it.

Wow, that was way, way too much of an explanation - thanks for grabbing this Frenchie, it's always appreciated.

That is the sickest artwork I've seen on TA.

in, btw...

Posted by Glaniskanis on Aug-06-2008 10:14:

Im SO on this, its not even funny
Just put it on my phone, and gonna enjoy the sun now with this on the headphones
Will report back later!

Posted by Glaniskanis on Aug-06-2008 11:58:

Oh man... I totally love this set!
I was thinking of doing one for my vacation next week but Im gonna go with this one instead

A couple of the tunes were known to me so those were good to hear
Mixing on this is stellar all the way through, but the programming and flow is defo as good if not better
I definitely agree with nefardec, was really cool to hear you take it the opposite way of what I thought was coming
Amazing job imo, and I will report back with what my friends thought of it after my vacation haha

I'm going to download this because I like your description. But if it is good I'm going to need a tracklist!

Hahaha - that is awesome, Glannie! Thank you so much for the kind words - really feels good to hear the kinds of feedback I've gotten from you and Adam, especially because I really thought that this mix was particularly self-indulgent of me (even moreso than my sets usually are ).

And I'm assuming the known tunes in there were known to you for a reason () - thanks again for all your help these past few months. Wouldn't be anywhere near where I am without it.

I'm glad to see others enjoy it - it's like montana said, I just love finding good new music and sharing it with people.

Blah blah blah programming, blah blah blah.

It's ok, but I honestly think you try waaaaaaaaaaay too hard sometimes to be different and it just ends up sounding boring.

This shit is like Miles Davis on acid and simply doesn't do it for me.

I can appreciate that you don't like it, but I certainly resent you saying "I try too hard to be different" at least a bit.

I don't do anything for any reason other than that I like it. I'm sorry you don't enjoy it, but don't confuse your taste and my motivations.

And "Miles Davis on Acid" is actually pretty much exactly what I was going for, so at least we know I did what I wanted to.

Please tell me you ID'd that by ear!?!

If you did, you've earned an even more special place in my heart than you previously had - which was already pretty special!

Definately. I used to listen to that song quite a bit. Thanks for bringing it back to my attention.

That is awesome - other than like two friends from back home, you're the first person I've ever known who even knew what that song was!

I've been dying to use it in a demo for about 8 years now - so glad I was finally able to make it happen.

I'm also suprised at the lack of attention that song got. Considering the band whom produced it. Easily my favourite from them.

Agreed completely. It's also one of those tunes I instantly associate with Summer and being outside.

Posted by elFreak on Aug-07-2008 07:34:

i just finished listening, and i must say there are a few of these that i have been playing a bit. (tracklist?). While this is not the stuff i would probably record, it is really great background music (esp after a full night of radiohead). I don't need to comment on the mixing anymore...it is well done.

cheers man.

Posted by cmay119 on Aug-07-2008 07:38:

For sure. Btw, I really enjoyed the rest of this mix from you as well. It definately seems to be a step away from your usual sound. It does show you're very flexible behind the decks.

You impress me more and more each time you release these, Rob.

Keep up the good work. I'd really enjoy hearing you in a club environment. Hopefully when/if I make a trip down to Chicago, that would be a possibility.

Posted by Axer on Aug-07-2008 08:17:

Good Stuff Rob! I like how you switch. I heard you before.
SO, EAH! FUCK TRACKLIST! THIS IS GONZO! LOL

Posted by Axer on Aug-07-2008 08:29:

I'm like OMG WTF INCUBUS!

Posted by Mr Game+Watch on Aug-07-2008 15:27:

Just got through with this and I have to say... it's very "you". Which is a good thing, of course! Like, I can't describe it by saying "this has lots of influence from DJ X" or "the soundscapes harken back to DJ Y". The signature sound I expect from you is there - the light, tropical, percussive elements.. the jazz influences, the rhodes and chords. I could do without the spoken word samples in one or two of the tracks but that's just personal preference. Also didn't notice any hitches whatsoever in the mixing.

Favorite songs are the first track, the sax track near the end, and the one at 39 min or so.

When I first heard the song @ around 28 minutes I thought it was gonna break out into Chrono Trigger's Zeal theme

Posted by lcid on Aug-07-2008 16:04:

wow is Aqueous Transmission really that unknown?

glad to see the Incubus influences... especially considering 2 of my mixes were named after Incubus songs.

i listened to this at the end of the day yesterday and it was good music to have on in the background while i was working. i need to give it a few more listens before i give it my official review though.
