Do you really think that these games will have no impact whatsoever? What's wrong with a possible democracy, by the way?

This is probably the best thing that could possibly have happened to China. The communist regime cannot control all these foreigners as if they were ordinary citizens. This may well be the seed of a later democratic revolution thanks to the influx of new ideas. Besides, the Olympic Games tend to be profitable events, and they can't control the market (and the citizens) forever. Beijing is not Berlin 70 years ago.

Nothing is wrong with Democracy.. but what you are suggesting with words like 'communist regime' is that presently China is having some evil governmening system that tortures millions of Chinese.. and these Chinese people who have been living and thriving on its present system has been for past 50 years praying for the overthrow of the 'communist regime'. Well let set something very clear.. Chinese and China have acheived what they are today under this system.. and they like it.. they dont need an influx of ideas.. What would be diffcult to prevent? And prevent from whom? What makes you think that Chinese people want democracy? What makes you think that Iraqies want democracy?

Wait, what are you talking about? I didn't mention torture... or Iraq, for that matter. I didn't even intend to speak on their behalf, let alone tell what they want. I don't know whether that is how China is presented in the US (and I don't even know if you are in the US), but that's not where I'm coming from.

First of all, foreigners bring new ideas, you like it or not. China has been doing quite well thanks to many ideas imported from abroad, and it's recognised the need to adapt its system, because they can't control everything. But, I wonder how far they can go with such control, because once the scenario becomes too complex, it's virtually impossible to keep track of everything that is going on, let alone manage what is allowed and what isn't.

Did any of these words imply that communism is evil and that democracy is the last bottle of coke in the desert and that without it they're doomed? No, not at all. That just seems to be how the game is played nowadays, and I wonder whether they can keep their rules for much longer.

And, if you really want my opinion about Iraq, I don't think the American army should have even considered the invasion.

Yup, what a pointless thing to do. I don't know why anyone would want to have their ideas criticised and/or work on their debating skills. It's even more stupid to do that on the internet... what kind of losers do research on their arguments and practice their writing?

Pfffttt.... we all know normal people are never wrong anyway, why argue?

for $300,000,000.00 you better get a damn good show...personally, I think the money could have gone to better use.

you could say that about almost every celebration, obviously not to that extent but in the grand scheme of wasting money companies/organizations do it all the time at least this is entertaining and a one time thing...also doesn't that include the costs of both the opening and closing ceremonies?

didn't catch the opening but i've been watching the parade of nations right from the beginning, starting with greece. these announcers suck, how would it feel to be known as "another caribbean island" or "this is the country where madonna adopted her baby", or nothing at all and just a quick name mention during a montage of countries left out because of commercial breaks.

romania's on right now, my favorite outfits so far. haha.

well i don't think they just have the time to mention every significant piece of detail about each country through its 20 seconds of passing in front of camera that will be relevant and interesting to americans.

Im really proud of what China did to impress all the audiences, They sure put up a show.

We, Chinese waited over 100 years for this to happen of course we will be spending some money to show the world that China has come up to another level. For people who say its a waste of money just think it s this way. China was trying to impress the WORLD with the opening and they did it. All the money spend was for all the people that took their time n money to come and see the show.

Traditional Chinese loves to invite friends and family for any gathering, we love to be the host for dinners , parties for people to join and its always the top priorty to let the guest to have fun.

If you understand a little bit about Chinese culture, you would know all these money spend was to please the crowd and give them the best show.

I think China should win an Oscar for best Olympic ceremony... or at least nominated for it.
