China has made a mockery of the olympics....the entire country should be banned from further olympics....its worse then testing positive for a banned substance.

Tell me where it didn't happen. Remember Atlanta, 10 years ago? The US had nothing to prove - yet, it did try to impress everyone else.

It's about time we stopped laughing at China as if it were a joke. It got trashed by European powers in the 19th century, and were seen as inferior. Last century, in spite of their controversial policies, they became one of the most promising powers in world economy. In spite of all difficulties, and some unfortunate decisions, they're back in the game.

Sure, it's far from being heaven on Earth. However, when you live in a "3rd World Country" that has been struggling to become a better place, and achieved what China has achieved, respect is the least you (and your government) deserve.

what is wrong with the world where the government makes a 7 year old hide her face because she's not as cute ? talk about giving someone a complex later in life.

It's a tiny bit better, but tell that to all the Chinese Falun Gong followers.

it's a cult, don't know why anyone would buy into pro falun gong propaganda.

It's a spiritual practice, not a fucking cult you dumbass. You're obviously the one buying into ChiCom propaganda. It's amazing how you condone persecution and torture from the Chinese government for people who practice a spiritual practice that's hardly a threat to Chinese society.

And seriously, fuck off with that stupid chart. China's economy can boom for all I care, it's still a country run by a shit oppressive regime.

When you host the Olympics, it's kind of your job to impress the rest of the world.

The petty self-righteousness and all the china bashing I'm seeing is kind of ironic...

All this boils down to the good ol' Asian concept of face / image.
Superficial beautification is of importance above all other aspects.
Any loss of face is not in the least bit tolerable.
Not surprised by this at all.
I daresay you should do whatever it takes to put on a good show, be it emulate / imitate or even simulate, but at least cover your tracks properly.

If Japan were hosting the Olympics, their attention to detail would've been profound and they'd have left nothing to chance.

Ironically, this might cost the Chinese some unexpected loss of face.
The West is obviously outraged and will slander the Chinese for quite a while.

It's simply because we weren't alive to see it personally back then

Interesting graph, by the way.
